I used to have nVidia GPUs all these years, first time that I don't - because they didn't have the GPU I wanted at the time and ordering would've taken too long, as my old one had broken down and my PC was nigh useless.
Guess it's nVidia again after this one.
This problem has come in and out since beta, and with 2.3, its super back with force. I, too, am using an AMD card, 7970, and have been dealing with this memory leak problem for a while. It sucks, and its caused me to miss several S-rank hunts and a myriad of A-rank hunts since the patch. When this was happening during beta, however, it was WAY WORSE because crashing to desktop meant that I couldn't log back in for days sometimes.
It would REEEEEEEALLY be nice if Square/AMD addressed this. But seeing as how this has been happening for the better part of a year, I don't see a fix anytime soon. I'm gonna write to AMD but I doubt anything will come from it.
It's not impossible that AMD is not interested in helping fix it because it's only DX9, but you should write to them and ask anyway. See if they have any forums for driver support. And be prepared to fend off... people... that refuses to accept that it could be a driver problem.
I am still having issues with this. It's to the point now that if I'm in any area with a large influx of people teleporting I drop to 1-2 FPS and subsequently crash.
It's made it impossible to get to S rank hunts now. I've gotten an 'unexpected error' crash every 1-2 hours now.
I've tried multiple versions of drivers, three different graphics cards across two machines, and they both are having the issues stated in this thread. I can't believe we haven't even gotten a reply from a community rep about this, yet.
I'm not the only one having issues with this, multiple people I talk to on a daily basis are having crashes very similar to mine. Or if they're using nVidia cards, their display will disconnect, and then the game will bug out.
when it happens:
- hunting, lots of people on screen, long loading times (especially Mor Dhona), lots of teleports
before it freezes:
- minor artifacts on screen (pixels or group of pixels going in random colors) usually small size
- people disappearing, sometimes even A rank marks (and always S rank)
- game freezes for a second or 2, then continues, may happen 3-4 times before the "ultimate" freeze and unexpected error report (crash)
- i can be afk in the game for 3-4h, then start to hunt, after 10-15 mins a crash is imminent
how the freeze looks like:
- usually a drop of fps to 0-1-2 fps, game locks, but sometimes (not always) the chat window is still active.
- Does not effect other software, like TeamSpeak or Chrome
Tried:
- Changing the graphical settings does not seems to help with the issue
- Changing the number of displayed people and objects or displayable effects (skills) from other people does not help with the issue
What i think is the issue:
Memory leak. Since a large amount of people is going in an out, we could say that the mouse has become an elephant, and an error (tiny memory leak) that could be ignored, cannot be anymore. My guess is the gear / vanity gear "overwrite".

Could we please get an official response of some sort, here? The issue was introduced with the last patch, and it definitely seems like it's common enough to be addressed.
I'm having the same issues. Running 2 x 290X (Only one working in FFXIV ofc) on a 4k monitor. At first I thought the resolution was the problem but seems I was wrong.
As most have already posted porting out of any highpop place, or sometimes just moving around in a highpop area, fps drops to 1-2 and often than not game crashes a couple of seconds later.
Other times models don't show/load or random textures, most often the map and/or minimap background won't load, symbols and legends on the map is showing though.
Currently running Catalyst 14.7RC, unsure if I have had the issue on these but can't say for sure since I havn't played all that much FFXIV with these drivers. I know I have the issue with 14.4 (current stable) or older drivers though.
Is there anyone in this thread that is having these problems and isn't using an AMD GPU?
Yes, one of the cards I tested this with was a GTX 660. Instead of slowing down to 1-2 FPS and crashing, it would instead disconnect the display for up to 30 seconds. After that I noticed a marked performance drop, but no crash. Still pretty bad, though.
