Considering coming back...

Hey all
Im lately considering to start playing ff again, but since its been almost a year when i left i have no idea whats the state of the game now ^^

So i have a few questions and if someone would be so kind to answer them.
1) how is leveling? I remember you had to do some zone events to level up, and dungeons, so im curious if people are still doing them, or will i be stuck?
2) How is the population, are the servers more or less dead, or is the game still popular?
3) I already have a level 50 paladin, whats your advice, to just level a BLM with the same char or create a complete new one?

Hello there! Leveling is the same. Fates, Dungeons, etc. There are also new little things that can help you get extra exp like weekly challenges, hunts, etc. Population, depending on the servers, but I think most serverd are quite active, I can only vouch for Ultros, still active. As for leveling a new clas, I would go with the same character, but thats all preferences imo.

If interedted, I have an FC in Ultros that help with story content instances, so you can clear them asap, and enjoy the high level events smoothly : )

1) FATEs are slightly less crowded in some areas, but there will always be a few players running them. A lot of FATEs now having scaling difficulty, so they should be doable even with 2 or 3 party members. Some players even take their chocobo with them to help support. Most players will queue for roulette dungeons as part of their novus farm or myth farm. You will see a steady stream of players for all dungeon and trial types. Be aware that many would prefer a speedrun, and that most will be understanding enough not to curse your name if you can't do it.

2) Some servers are more active than others. Odin is apparently quite popular, with Leviathan, Ultros, and Sargantas ranking up there too. You can probably get a rough idea of server density by checking house prices in the latest patch notes. The most populous servers have the more expensive housing prices, although it's not an exact corollary.

3) It's up to you. Some players like to min/max. Others do it for the aesthetic appeal. Most players with alts I've met do so because they have enough time to cap allagan on multiple characters. That may just be a result of my server demographic though.

Leveling is a lot easier now with roulette, challenge log etc,
When I came back a few months ago, I rolled a new character, so I could see the game through fresh eyes, knowing if I needed I have a decked out level 50
Gives the game a whole new perspective if you try it a new

Yeah i have my paladin on odin, but i will probably reroll a new char, since im a bit rusty, to keep the leveling smooth, and my char has freaky eyes anyway

So is there some in depth leveling guide out there that you know of?

Tbh any guides will be outdated fast as every main patch and filler patch seems to add content to shake it up a bit.
Just follow where the main scenario takes you, and ensure you do your daily roulette as they level you up fasts
Example being my newer character, hit 50 whilst still on the main scenario quest to kill the guy in Coerthas

I returned after 6 months. Leveling is very fast with roulettes, and especially with the challenge log. Fates work too, though I do not usually count on them - I level my classes on roulettes and challenges, mostly, with leve quests thrown in at some points, or to finish a challenge, and the occasional straight dungeon.

Ok so doing ruletes, dungeons, fates and all together, how long does it take to level from 0-50?

If you play for say five hours a day, I can imagine a week tops, mine only took about a week, then it leveled it as a healer so queues were near instant a lot of the time, really depends on play style, I leveled fast as I remembered where to go for next area.
Challenge log and roulette really does give a lot of xp, you can unlock guild hest roulette after you have completed two I believe, might actually be one and next unlocks, same with dungeons. Daily roulette tends to level you up regardless unless you get put in ifrit, titan trial etc
Also challenge log is a nice easy Gil earner since most of the challenges reward Gil, as does roulettes
Don't forget to unlock choco companion at 30 too in camp tranquil faster kills and they have their own challenge log entry
