Well this isn't a small arena like Wolfs den. This is a large scale PvP battle. You can walk away with no kills because you didn't deal the finishing blow. ( which makes you out to be weak) Specially since they count deaths.

Former Spirit Master in Aion, everyone loved my fears in battlegrounds, made enemies run like headless chickens while the rest of group killed them.
Did it matter to me or my guild I had no kills? no, because perma CCing them was my job.

You don't need numbers to know you did good. You just know when you did.
Number almost never tell the whole story and are only useful for epeen stroking, if you have low kills or dmg or heals because you were guarding a flag who was rarely attacked, you did a better job that someone kill-trading blindly.

Hey I'm a healer, I kill almost nothing but I know after all is said and done if I did well or not.
To put it in CoD terms, having a great K/D ratio doesn't mean you are a great player.

Is there something wrong with having Assists? If the concern is more epeen stroking you might as well remove K/D too.
