Circumventing the bottom Magitek field in 1000 Maws

It is possible to bypass doing the Bottom Level 1 Magitek field when doing the northern/top boss by going through the Level 2 Magitek field then returning and opening the Level 3 Magitek field once you have 4 Photocells, this seems unintended, and I will admit I did this a few times until I realized what I was doing, but many people seem to do it and I can't believe it was intended as a shortcut.

Steps:
1. Collect the first four Photocells.
2. Unlock the northern Magitek device to unlock Level II Magitek Field.
3. Continue east and collect another four Photocells.
4. Use the Return command from the menu to return to the dungeon entrance.
5. Go back to the northern Magitek device again and use the cells to unlock Level III Magitek Field, while completely bypassing the need to use the southern Magitek device to unlock the Level I Magitek Field.
6. Continue towards the northern boss room while collecting four more Photocells.
7. Unlock the Northern Boss room, defeat Shaula, all without ever unlocking the Level I Magitek Field.
