Why can't I "Need" this item?

I'm a Dragoon and I'm going through some dungeons trying to get the level 38 and level 32 Scale Mail armors. Obviously they rarely appear since there's so many other items available, but when they do, I'm not given the option to "Need" them, even though it specifically says they are available to LNC and DRG...

Last few runs, I could only "Greed" them, and the tank "Need"ed them and got them.

So why can't a Dragoon "Need" Scale Mails? No I do not have them either. They aren't even "Unique" anyway. It's Pink.

if it has tanks before dragoon, its not dps gear.

Just because you can use an item doesn't mean you can Need lot on it unfortunately.

Striking/Maiming accessories are a good example of this.

Had a similar situation occur with gear not as specific as yours but Disciple of Magic. Being a BLM at the time I was only able to roll greed and the WHM was able to roll need. When I asked the same question was told it is based on the stats the item provides.

That is interesting. I can see if the item can be used by all classes, such as accessories. But if an item clearly states LNC/DRG you should be able to NEED that item if you are on LNC/DRG. I'd /bug it, with a screenie next time it happens. That is not WAI.

I went through this issue when I was new to the game, back when it was released.

It's a very frustrating aspect of how Aetherial gear works.
It depends on the stats it is randomised with.

If it has random stats more akin to tank gear (Parry for example), then a Dragoon cannot need it.

I had complaints then, and I still have complaints.
Scale Mail is DRG gear, we should be able to need it.

Honestly you're better off. Other than the look, the secondary stats favor tanks. Sure you'll have more hp... but less potential damage. I actually never liked the idea of this gear. Tanks shouldn't be wearing it neither should drgs. But it does look cool.

That's not how it works. The gear is considered on the lighter end of tank gear, hence why Lancers can equip it. But still considered tank gear.

No that is how it works. Scale mail is in no way tank gear. It does not have the defense of tank gear, and I die a little inside every time I see a tank wearing it.

They are not wearing it while tanking, but in the open world or when not needed as an off tank they will equip dps gear to dish out a bit of damage. Example would be e.g. Atomos (spelled like that?) in CT
