Basically sums up Novus weapons. Even with the optimal setup of materia, they still won't be better than a High allagan weapon, and they require WAY more time and effort to get. Why would anyone ever bother with it?

Because - if I'm allowed to make a generalization - relic weapons were made for people that don't have the skill or static group required to obtain the HA weapons.
Or the regular playtime to be part of a static group.
Not being able to take part in 2nd coil because of how I work basically locks me out of ever getting the best or 2nd best gear in the game, with the exception of Novus. Even though it's a mindless crawl to get it, I'm thankfull for it.
Well, locked out would be more correct since we now can get sand/oils/UAT from ST![]()
It's almost as if the best weapon in the game is...the best? And that other choices are mostly an availability thing? My god, you've cracked the code.
That would be true if, like the last set of weapons, the next step down was a simple matter of a few Tomestone items. This is much much more for basically the same thing.
There are many reasons why someone would not be able to get high allagan for example my FC just recently started doing endgame content we don't have enough members we are short 1. Recently killed Garuda Ex and working on Titan Ex got him to 50% on our first night technically second night but 1st time didn't count since I had atrocious lag. This is my second month playing and I got my atmas swiftly working on Animus because it would be a while before we are able to get high allagan.
I think this falls under the part of my sentence that mentioned not having a static group......
This might be stretching it, but I'm gonna say if you have the "time" to get a Novus weapon (really, how long did it take?), you have the time to learn a bit of second coil.... but everyone's time not matching up with yours (or vice versa) would also fall under not having a static group to get it done.

I haven't finished my Novus yet, at 32/75 at the moment.

But I still have a lot of playtime so to speak, but it differs from week to week because of alternating shifts.
Have had several offers to be part of coil statics, but we agreed that me not being able to join every week would be a bad thing, especially regarding progression.
I could get some runs in T6-8 probably, but not see me clearing T9 anytime soon. Mostly due to lockouts and not many groups have that on farm with pugs yet.
I am working on Novus and don't plan to try 2nd coil unless my FC finally beat turn 5. There are 2 main reasons for this:

1) I don't want to join groups of screaming retards that say they want to practice but quit after 1 wipe and don't plan to lie that I know 2nd turn and get kicked after 5 min - I better waste my time doing Novus instead (this way I spend time with more fun and some actual reward in the end)
2) I do things I can actually complete alone to pimp up my gear as much as possible to be able to help my FC and myself to finally beat turn 5 and start 2nd coil
Just wait till they add a relic only bonus skill, you will be sorry you never did it.....
