1.18 is great but we still need better optimization of the game.

i have been playing almost since release and my specs are:

    athlon x4 640 (oc to 3.5ghz)
    8gb ddr2 corsair
    750 watt antec psu
    gainward gtx 260 (slightly oc)
    windows 7 64 bit

i know what you going to say why am i still rocking a gtx 260 when the rec is a gtx 460, well various reasons the first being that all my other games (cysis2, witcher 2, batmanAA etc) work great and i can have most games on default high, and secondly i have a lot of bills to pay so a new gc has to wait:P

so i have read in various places that the game is not well optimized especially for hd's, which i have a couple of and FFXIV is installed on a samsung 1tb sata 2 7200rpm. i can understand this taking a long time but i think the dev team should maybe try focusing more on optimising the game itself rather than simple annoying in game bugs and content.

i use this guide here to toggle the nvidia settings:
    http://ffxiv.findtalk.net/t29-graphic-tweak-and-setting-for-lower-end-pc

and i find in a lot of areas, places where i was getting 30fps i now get 38 to 42 fps which is a nice little boost but im still gettting the same lag everyone else gets in say Uldah like 20 fps which is simply unacceptable to be honest.

I love the game to bits but i find it very hard to play it when its soo laggy in certain area's and i know if the dev team just focused on ironing out these hardware problems for a little while and delivered an overall smoother game play experience a lot of people including myself would be happy and could play for a few hours with no problems

    what do u guys think?

will the game eventually be better optimized?

any recommendations to anything ive said?

It should be, but not until PS3 release and map redesign.

Honestly there are other things that need fixing before that, and they shouldn't use up time that could be spent on content until they're going for a re-release.

Comparing single player games with MMORPGs performance-wise is never a good idea. The number of characters on screen simply varies too broadly.

20 FPS in a crowded area with a medium range PC like yours in a MMORPG with a high end engine is pretty much to be expected.

You might manage to get a bit more juice out of your rig by using gamebooster, but don't expect miracles.

PS: forcing vsync like written in the guide you're following will cap your fps and considerably lower performance (funny that he downloaded rivatuner to do that, considering that both nvidia and ATI cards have it in their settings, anyway, better not to use it if you're already struggling).

forced vsync limit up and down FPS at a price of a lower high limit

I cant see huge improvements coming in hi player load areas, the level of detail is very hi for a mmo, but more some of the systems they use would need massive changes to reduce it.
The game defiantly has a lot more optimization to be done and a lot that has, but then all mmos do till they are a good 18months old at least.
(look at what EvE is capable of now I remember 50+ man lag fights not 1-2k+)
So with the focus in other areas atm it will take a least a year before we see much imo.

Only advice is if its a 216 core GTX260 you should be looking at a 680-700mhz OC really. (Do not go up past the 680 unless your sure with your Oc'ing)
My bad 216core 260 would hit 700 though and the good one stable over 720 with careful tweaking.

That guide looks to be based mostly of the beta settings where vsync forced on and some other things did actually boost fps a little, I've no idea if it is still valid now with the live client though.
(I did personally use it along with other tweaks also with and without the crysis sli trick on my then GTX260's and gain 3+fps (7+fps with sli trick) in most places)

Playing on 450Gts and let me tell you i can play on pretty much high setting i even try depth of field and amient occlusion not at the same time but you do get a 25-30fps in the city and 40fps outside not too my liking so i dont have any of them on.

i just try a new setting and pretty much am getting this

    Window size 1440x900
    multsampling 16xq CSAA
    genereal drawing quality = 8
    Background drawing =5
    Shadow=high
    texture quality=high
    Texture filtering=highest

I even have everything on within game shadows and the other setting and i don't see any type of lag just the lag the same lag i would get if i had everything on standard.

So ya ffxiv need to be better optimization even if you play on the lowest setting you have lag within city which is a joke to me.

cancel the terrible 16x AA....it's only a waste of VGA power..

I play in 1920x1080 with 4x AA and there isn't Aliasing

I have a gtx 590 then I don't need to reduce settings..but...you are fien with 8x AA (or 4x too) and you can enjoy a better framerate

I deactivate Vsync from Nvidia control panel and set "single display performance mode"

    After this

    1920x1080P (windowed)
    4XMSAA
    General Drawing 8-9
    background drawing 5
    Shadow Highest
    Ambient Occlusion
    Depht of field
    Texture quality: High
    Texture Filtering: Highest

You can probably use MSAA 4x 8x
    Your resolution
    General Drawing 8
    Background 5
    Shadow: High
    NO ambient occlusion
    Depht of field (try)
    Textures quality:High
    Textures filtering: High/Highest
