The whole Acheron/Titan thing is amusing as a matter of what localization was willing to do but what the native region was not willing to do. They called Acheron "Titan," but they spelled it differently. Now this would have been very confusing to try and do in other regions. Due to the phonetic nature of Kana and the fact that "Titan" is used in the Japanese version of the game as a foreign word... Ok, let me stop there for those of you who don't know Japanese. They have this entire alphabet, or syllabary (syllable alphabet, if you will), called Katakana which is reserved almost exclusively for phonetic spelling of foreign words. Of which they have a lot. Most words in Japanese have Kanji. Kanji are symbols with inherent meaning. Very odd if you're not familiar with the language. But most of the native words in Japanese can be written with Kanji, which originate from China and in many cases have analogues in Traditional Chinese that are written exactly the same or with little difference and have no difference in meaning. But they have different pronunciation depending on what combination they are in! Wrap your head around that.

Simple explanation, we have one recognized way to spell "Titan." Trying to spell "Titan" differently in English, or Roman Alphabet, or any other language that uses a modified version of Roman Alphabet, would likely create a great deal of confusion. "Titan" in Japanese is already a very foreign phonetic anyway. I don't know this for sure, but they may have actually used a different phonetic for "Titan" in FF3 or any other FF game and chose to use that phonetic for the artist formerly known as Acheron. Meanwhile, as the euro-languages would make a mess with our trying to comprehend the phonetic trick the devs played in Japanese, Fern (and probably the others) decided that having many Acherons was better than having many Titans. Or Taitens. Or pick your awkward phonetic.

Does anyone know if the JP name for Acheron was a translation of "Titan" that had been used in FF3 or another FF game? The standard word used is タイタン I believe. The word they used for Acheron was ティターン　(which is, amusingly enough, the same spelling used in Z Gundam for the "Titans" organization).

Sorry for the long off topic post, but this translation and localization stuff fascinates me.
