Yes, there's a new patch out. It's number 1.18. It's the first in a series of patches that will be coming throughout the summer that will make some pretty huge changes to the battle system, and pretty much all the game systems in general. 1.19 will probably come in about another month.
I don't know much about your server, or the other servers in general. I would imagine each is slightly different. And they probably also vary depending on when you're playing. It's possible that the characters that you were trying to talk to don't speak English. (There's an auto-translate feature in the chat log. Start typing something, like "Nice" then hit the tab button, and phrases will pop up, like "Nice to meet you." Select the phrase you want, and it will put it into your chat log. So when you send that to someone who speaks Japanese, that person will see the Japanese version of "Nice to meet you.")
Considering your level, and the fact that SE isn't charging for new characters, feel free to start a new character on several different servers and go with the one you like best.
People do talk in the game, but they usually talk in Linkshell chat. So try to join a linkshell. Check these new player forums and the forums for your server and see if any linkshells have posts inviting new players to join. That's probably the best way to get started. Your linkshell mates will give you someone to do events with, someone to socialize with, and people to give you advice and a helping hand when you need it.
Yes, Conjurer is as close as this game gets to a dedicated healer. Conj has the best healing spells right now, and the best "Raise" spells, as well as the best buffs. Also, I'm guessing choosing conjurer would be good for me. I really enjoy playing healer class, so I'm guessing this is as close to a dedicated healer as it gets right?
But keep in mind that the game gives you the freedom to level several different classes, and to equip most of the abilities from any one class while doing another. So if you want to play Conjurer as your main class, it's often a good idea to do some leveling of Thaumaturge (the other mage class), too, so you can get the benefit of some Thaumaturge spells while playing Conjurer.
Play around with it. Take advantage of the freedom you get in the FFXIV system. You might even find another class you enjoy playing.Well, every class benefits from Vitality, since that increases the amount of Hit Points you get. The longer you can survive, the more likely you are to kill the mob.I'm also confused on how to distribute my attribute points. If I'm a conjurer, what should I put the points too first (stat wise).
But as a mage class, you're going to want to focus on Mind (which controls how many Magic Points you get), Piety, and Intelligence.
At low levels, I'd probably put points into Mind and Vitality first. And then put points into Piety and Intelligence.
But fair warning -- the effects of attribute points will probably be changing in a future patch. In fact, they're apparently going to get rid of physical levels altogether, and vastly rearrange the benefits of certain attributes.
I wouldn't. If I were you, I'd start doing leves, behest, and quests as soon as possible. Especially if you're just learning the game, those tutorial quests can be very helpful at introducing you to different game systems. Plus, they give you free weapons/tools for other classes, so you won't need to buy them.Should I level up to a certain point before working on quests?
Your first couple levels will fly by. I'd head over to the rank 10 camp at about level 5 or so. And then, you can move to the next level camp at every level that ends with -5. At level 15, start doing leves at the rank 20 camp. At level 25, start doing leves at the rank 30 camp. And at level 35, you can start doing leves at the rank 40 camp. **EDIT** -- Had to change this paragraph because they apparently changed the levels at which you can move to a new camp to levels that end in -5. Sorry about the wrong info!
Behest is sort of a leve that you can do every 30 minutes. A "Battle Warden" will pop at each aetheryte camp. Just click on him, accept his quest, and party up with anyone else who's doing the behest. Then you'll all run out and fight mobs. It's also a great way to meet some other players.
And keep an eye out for NPCs with an exclamation point over their heads. Those folks offer "side quests" that you can do to get SP and different rewards, like gear, gil, food, potions, etc.Totally up to you. But like I said, leveling more classes gives you more options for weapon skills and abilities that you can equip. The more classes you do, the more well rounded your character will become. How many jobs or classes do I need to work with? Or is that up to me?
But, to be honest, it's a game, so I'd just do whatever you enjoy. No problem. If you have any more quests, feel free to look around these forums, or post your questions here. Thanks in advance! I'm anxious to play but I can't get things rolling!
Welcome to the game. And have fun!
