Turn 5 and titan problems

This is basically as far as you can go without a static/fc that will help you.

My first Titan clear was with a pug, and I've cleared it with a pug after that as well.
My first couple of T5 downs were with a pug as well (all single tank).

It is definitely possible, but it is hard to find a good one.

Were the pug groups pre 2.2? IMO pugs have gone way downhill since 2.2. Back when these instances were farmed the quality of players joining was much much better. Lately and ex or T5 pug is terrible and not worth the hassle.
