fishing question about different types of bait for different fish

Hey I'm new to fishing and have been looking hard but not being able to find an informative guide about what bait to use to catch a certain type of fish.

Can you use any bait to catch one? say for example hit level 50 and then just use level 50 bait for catching every fish at a location?

any help I'd appreciate

Some fish prefer certain bait but as long as the bait is usable at the hole (won't get anything using freshwater lures for ocean fishing, for example) the chance is there.

In general, desirable fish for crafting or leves tend to favor consumable baits over reusable ones (and the time between bites will be shorter).

cool thanks for reply, if some fish do prefer a type of bait I can't find a guide anywhere that says, fishing log doesn't state it either, not good for my ocd ;p

This is the best guide from the best XIV fishing forum since 1.0. Click on any page then fish and you'll see which bait is optimal; it is set up identically to your fishing log. It also gives you the optimal path for the more difficult fish. For example, I've linked the page for the Titanic Sawfish; most people think using Lugworms (very low level bait) has to be a typo or something. In reality, it locks in the first fish required for the mooch chain (you can only catch Gobies with the lugworm), which actually accelerates your chances of landing a Sawfish immensely.

Some bait gives you clues, like rivers or lakes.

As with the titanic sawfish example, lower level bait or lures can help isolate moochable fish. Lower level bait or lures are also used when targeting certain desirable fish so higher level, but unwanted, fish will not bite.
