Possible solution to "ranged only dps"

I'm not R50 yet, but from what I understand a lot of the issue is the AoE attacks of monsters. Basically ranged classes avoid those attacks while still doing damage, so healers aren't as strained as with melee dps.

Here's what I would do if I wasn't an archer: step back and heal MYSELF quick, then go back in for more action. I really don't feel like it's that hard.. if I'm in a group on my archer and I get aggro and get hit, I just stop dps'ing to get my hate down.. then I heal myself to full and go back at it!! Easy enough!! And now you can even see when your hate is low enough to start fighting again!!

Well, that's just what I would do. If anyone has any comments or suggestions, or actual melee dps experience, I'd like to hear it. Especially if there are R50 LNC, MRD, PUG, that have been successful with this technique.

You seem to be forgetting a common factor. It seems a majority of damage dealers I play with in FFXIV are a little..to say it politely, slow in the head. In an ideal world, you could get a group full of melee DPS classes to do the dungeons, and they would be smart enough to run OUT of the AoE attacks and heal themselves when necessary, but that just isn't going to happen.

I am glad you know what you are doing however.

Except, as melee, when you step back, you are not dealing damage, thus lowering your DPS and making archers more desirable.

As for curing yourself - either you are using TP abilities to do so (thus lowering your DPS) or being an MP sponge. You won't have enough mp yourself for more than a couple cures (unless you're going to disengage, lowering your DPS) and more people needing to be healed means that you need more healers (or your whole group has to go slower and wait for MP if you don't all just wipe).

Solution to the melee DDs having to run in and out all the time vs Ogre:

    Bring Archers instead.

That's a good suggestion. Also it's true most melee are of a one track mind. If anything melee is the people on easy mode, not casters.

So basically what you are saying is 'lose damage on the boss by taking classes that will have to heal themselves to save healer mana, thereby ensuring that ARC will receive every dps party slot available'.

    Fixed.

Seriously. Ogre can be killed without a single archer and without any damage sustained except for the tank. Inferno drop can be stunned, and everything else avoided. You never have to run away from anything aside from running from ghosts when they port.

Manage your hate. Pay attention to the log. Pay attention to the ghosts. Stand in the right spots. And make sure everyone knows their role.

The only difference between archers and melee DD is more exact positioning (very easy) and stunning (again, quite easy.)

So, just so I'm clear, this is your proposed chain of events:

    1. ARC can avoid the damage and keep doing dps, which makes ARC preferable.
    2. Instead stepping back to avoid the AoE, just eat the AoE as melee.
    3. After eating the AoE, stop damage to heal self.
    4. Meanwhile, ARC is still plugging away at DPS (better DPS, even) and not taking damage.

So, how the hell does that make sense, again?
