Until the day a group manages to do non-trivial content as classes with average gear, it will be deemed subpar and shunned.

It's perfectly viable to do some non-trivial content with classes already, it's just a lot harder and you need to be geared for a much higher ilvl than the equivalent job would need. That's the real issue here. The problem then is that when they add tougher content, the gap widens and you'll need yet more powerful gear to compete. They will never be on-par.
