Fair enough, although my situation, outside of what I noted above about my server, is very similar to yours.
I play for maybe 3 hours a day (If that) but I don't feel the game is in such a dire state. If anything, it's actually doing remarkably well, all things considered.
A lot can be done to make things better, but I don't think it's realistic to expect a holy trinity game to suddenly have no queues. As long as there is DPS/Tank/Heals; more people will choose the DPS path than the other roles.

If memory serves, WOW also had similar issues.
I played WOW since BETA, until Pandaria (I quit before the expansion; was bored). But in the vanilla days and even The Burning Crusade, the same issue you describe, plagued the game. This went on for almost 3 years.
Strangely enough, I never had problems with PVP queues. Once again, perhaps an issue with your data center; I was in the Whirlwind batch, Lightbringer server (Funny enough, a PVE server).

I suppose you could argue that Final Fantasy XI, and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn are J-MMORPG's instead, but they are still J-RPG's.
Be realistic, once you reach end game in either XI or XIV, it's another MMO cycle. There is nothing RPG or JRPG about it; and the dependency on several other party members will only grow.
Besides, it's not exactly about the MMO cycle, but the fact that you'll be more than capable of controlling all of your party members and thus eliminating the queue factor the OP has noted, in your standard offline/single player RPG or JRPG.

Sadly, this only works if your team mates agree, and I've seen plenty of instances where people 'gang up' on new players because they've made a simple mistake. The community can be extremely toxic to newcomers sometimes, since everyone wants to faceroll content.

Heck, the one and only time I was kicked from a duty it was because I had joined an LS group and we wiped. Our 2nd 'healer' spent 90% of their time in Cleric Stance, and did very little actual healing and somehow still managed to pin the blame on lack of heals on me. Birds of a feather flock together, as they say.

Anyway, as for queue times they SUCK on DPS. It's true. I've waited for over an hour in the queue trying to get a party, whether it's roulette or a specific dungeon. I hardly ever play my Black Mage or Summoner for this very reason. Queues are near instant on tank, and very manageable on white mage or scholar. Most of my summoner levels came from playing dungeons as a Scholar, in fact.

I just think that people prefer DPS jobs. DPS is generally much easier to play, since small mistakes go unnoticed. A mistake with a tank means losing aggro to something, and a mistake on a healer could result in a KO. It's higher risk. I guess most players just don't want that added responsibility, which is why there are so few of them to go around.

If we want more people to play as tanks and healers, maybe we should be more polite to tanks and healers, especially when things go south, and even when it is their fault. Just be constructive.

I'm on your server, do my daily roulette runs every weekday, some as healer and some as dps. My dps wait times are about 5 minutes longer than my sch wait time, which means they are about 5 min because when I run sch it pops almost instantly usually. As for crafting, I only have 2 at level 50 and have no problem selling the things I make (other than the undercutters, but everyone has that problem), you just have to know what to make. So like others have said, the 5 hour wait time is either BS, or you're doing something wrong.

BTW, I play at all different hours, so stated to avoid the "I only play when the server is less busy" argument, which wouldn't be valid anyway since you can swap servers to fix that.

One thing I should mention, she plays a ranged DPS, which from my experience have a significantly higher queue time than melee DPS.

Be helpful and empathetic. You will eventually come across someone who does the same and you two will click together like legos. If you bump into people who do the opposite, just move on to someone else. This method has never failed me.

If you seriously waited for 5 hours in a queue, then your queue was broken. If you had withdrawn and tried again, you would have gotten it in less than 15 minutes.

Also, the amount of DPS classes has nothing to do with long queues. DPS is, and will always be the easiest job. Not to mention that it's much harder to pinpoint a bad DPS, while noticing bad tanks/healers is way easier. That's why 90% of the players flock to it, and why there's such an imbalance in the queues.
