I don't disagree. I don't really want to see DBM-style stuff that trivializes fight mechanics and situational awareness (to the point where they have to start designing around the addons, like you said), but I would love is a way to take information already provided in the current UI change the way it's presented. For example, one idea I had was to move the buff/debuff timers displayed under your target's health bars to their nameplate. This would be super helpful for me since I've got a big montior and it can be a bit tough to set up the UI such that all the information I need in a fight is easily accessible, without either making my eyes travel a lot or making the UI look super cluttered and ugly.

A system flexible enough to do stuff like this, or to recreate the list-style inventory from 1.0, would be ideal. It doesn't need (and shouldn't have) the ability to cast spells for you, or to read the combat log, or to display warnings or play sounds in response to things like a monster beginning to cast something.
