So last night I finally hit 500 commendations and got my magitek, but as a friend told me, once you hit 500 ... there's really no incentive to give or recieve commendations. Are there any plans to add new commendation related achivements?

I might refer you to this thread: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...dation-Rewards
I don't know why you wouldn't give commendations if you reached the 500 already. Maybe they didn't get their 500 com yet. Also, it's a way you have to tell them that they did a great job or you enjoyed running with them.

No incentive to give or receive? Maybe to receive there is little point, but you can still give commendations to any player who left a positive impact on you (as you should). Maybe someone else would like to get that Gold Magitek as well...
Oh thanks, I'll go check it out now. Well, I give and recieve my commendations from PVP mostly, so standing there after the match is over with such long queues for such small amount of play time when the others might not even bother giving them is a bit of a waste of time specially now that I don't need them lol I think people who complain about giving them being a hassle aren't going about them the right way (and by this I mean harvesting them at pvp. 3 commends in less than 5 min? that's the way to get them).I might refer you to this thread: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...dation-Rewards

That's not the main problem though, it's more of a personal wish, like, I see them commend me and it doesn't mean anything in the bigger picture anymore
There is incentive to GIVE commendations - there is a challenge log that gives scaling experience point returns depending on your current level.
You could just continue to give comms to, oh i dunno, be a good person.
Hey, that's an extra free 1k gil every week just for clicking a button 5 times in one week. Why pass up free money?
Not to mention it completes a challenge in your challenge log, possibly completing a secondary challenge in the process for even more free gil.
It's not much, but it takes literally no effort and adds up..... and it's easy free gil.
I really hope you're an extreme minority or I feel bad for newer players in the future when many have their Gold Magiteks and decide that since they aren't fishing for comms themselves they don't need to hand any out. I'm sure as more people reach the 500 mark (most people are doing it slowly rather than farming them during PvP win trading or through Hests) they'll add a 750 and/or a 1000 comm reward. I know when 2.2 dropped there was maybe 10 of them on my server and if XIVSouls is to be believed there's only 67 of them currently out of 59000 characters I wanted to use the total across all servers but XIV Souls' top page has the magitek and gold magitek counts accidentally combined at the moment. I did however check multiple servers and the numbers are generally the same. Appeasing the literally 0.1% isn't likely that high on the priority list.
While there are no new rewards for receiving commendations, the Challenge Log rewards players for giving commendations, and the Challenge Log resets every single week. So that's something to think about.
I also hit the last commendation achievement, but now I make sure to leave the dungeon immediately after I give my commendation and/or receive the final loot drop (depending on whether I want the loot or not) so that other players are forced to commend other people.
