That still sounds like the armoury system, but the job name doesn't change. You equip a SCH job stone (and its unique weapon), you become an arcanist with exclusive healing abilities, you equip a SMN stone (and its unique weapon), you become an arcanist with exclusive dpsing abilities...

As for making these changes permament, nope. FFXIV's strenght is being able to do everything and change your class in a heartbit with no repercussion. Anything that goes against that is a big no no for me.
