I'm near 1k now, all legit. Most of them from Tank and healer jobs, but happened sometime 3 commends even as dps in light party duty.
Tank and healer isn't free commends anyway, it happened bad duties and got 0 comm as reward.
Never begging for them, I will never commend someone who asks for. The only method I know for "fast" commends farming, is playing guildhests roulette.

Looking at the achievements for FATE grinding, I assume IF they were to add more it would be for 1000, and then 3000 commendations, so I'm not particularly hoping for new ones any time soon. I'm almost up to 900 on my tank now. I did a ton of Guildhest roulette over a few days of casual grinding for commendations. I never used any sort of begging for commendations macro, nor queued with anyone I knew trying for free ones. The remaining 400 were just 2 or 3 here & there through various instances over the last few months.
My current commendations tend to go to melee classes as long as they do their job right. Tanks & Healers get plenty just for existing.
I remember I was doing Garuda Hm as a dragoon and when the 1st feathers spawn. I got my heavy trust buff up, blood for blood and the Cd that crits on the next hit. The feathersgot destroyed lol. It crits for about 950 and a lot people liked that. Got 4 because of that.

By the time you've gotten 500 commendations, you've probably gotten into the habit of being kind and courteous in instances (or at least gotten into the habit of NOT being a total asshat). Certainly there will be exceptions, but by and large I'd guess the player is rare who, after dinging that 500th commendation, sez to themself, "Well, dang, no more rewards to get - time to unleash my inner troll lolololololol!"
I wouldn't turn up my nose at further commendation rewards, but I don't really see any need for them.

I just wish the virulent climate of MMOs didn't exist to the point of requiring a commendation system and rewards to match. I always try to be courteous whenever I run stuff, and even though I play a tank, I never really care about getting commendations. I play a tank because:
1. It's a fast queue for almost everything (Labyrinth and Crystal Tower notwithstanding)
2. I've more or less gotten the hang of how tanking works
3. My presence as a tank reduces wait times on everyone else's duty finder.
4. I can use my tankishness to lead the party where it needs to go.
5. I can stop the party when a player needs to go AFK for a small break.
6. I can stop the party right in front of a boss door or before a group of mobs to explain strategy to rookies.
7. I can ensure that folks who are being dickish in a run don't stay in the run for very long.
8. With most players' attentions focused on me and my performance, I can shout out to other players who do really good work.
9. Because I'm the tank, I won't autopilot-commend the tank because I can't.
10. I can make the entire run much more enjoyable for everyone else where another tank might make the run unenjoyable and, therefore, could just cause an entire run to get completely ruined.
There are a lot of benefits to tanking for me. It's almost as if I'm not only controlling enmity from the enemies, but also the attitude of the players. And if I can spin that attitude to be positive, then everyone benefits!
