I had times where i was like "WHY THE HELL DID I GREED THAT?" or "CRAP I DONT REALLY NEED THIS, THE OTHER PERSON NEEDS IT MORE *going through the dungeon felling nothing but shame and regret and sorry for the poor kid, saying sorry a thousand times but still felling like I just killed someone*" lol i would love to change my vote or at least downgrade my vote from need to greed or to even "nvm pass"

And what about instances where you can only roll for loot once a week? Am I going to be forced to take a piece of gear I don't want and get screwed over by the weekly limitation?
Well, people can't roll need for an alt class. Let's say a nice bow drops. I don't need a bow cause I haven't even started leveling Archer and not sure if I ever will. There could be someone with a level 45 - 50 Archer who's currently playing their Lancer, so they can't hit need. I don't know if there's a person in this situation, so I either have to roll greed and risk screwing someone over (for an item i'll likely trade in for seals), ask and wait for everyone to respond, or pass. If i pass and everyone else does the same the item is lost completely. I don't want that. I want to have it if no one else does just because I may end up rolling that archer after all, or I may want to de-synth the weapon or trade in for seals.

It's really tiresome for everyone to ask on every drop if someone wants the item, and that's why I would want the 2nd chance. It wouldn't be like an aggressive salesman if the notification only appeared in the chat log (rather than making the loot window pop up again) and could be hidden in settings. If you still don't want the item that you passed on just take no action at all.

I like the WoW solution: After you looted something you can trade the item with everyone who was in the instance with you.
The item will become untradeable after 60 minutes or after you used it once.

That does seem like a good way to do it too, but I wonder if we would see "I need that more than you" arguments.

Ugh, I messed up last night and rolled greed (like always) in Syrcus Tower and got something I can't use!! Don't be me. Don't make that mistake. Two drops later, the Mage's robe I could have used. FOOK ME! FOOK YOU!

You find it very tiresome to take 5 seconds to ask the party if someone needs something? Really? Then maybe you need to just start passing everything and do runs with a group so that you don't need to ask who needs what for loot drops. I just greed most things and if anyone needs an item, they'll roll need. Whether I get the item or not, no one ever gets upset if they don't get an item, so I don't see the need to rehaul the loot system.

I really do not understand this fascination of wanting items to "not go to waste". It's a waste if it's an item no one can use or wants. Ask Square to make better loot drops so nothing "goes to waste" if that is how you feel. Honestly, this whole thread just sounds like people with massive OCD that can't stand to see something being tossed away. The whole idea just sounds like 60 second extension to the default loot timer.

Stop being argumentative. As I've explained already, you can't roll need if it's not for the class you are currently playing. Rolling greed all the time is fine and it's not something another players should / would get upset with you for doing, but personally I would rather be a little more courteous and not roll greed on something that i'm only going to trade in for Grand Company seals when that item could have been a very useful upgrade for the other players alt class. Asking constantly is definitely tiresome for each drop, and sometimes players can't easily communicate when on PS3 without keyboard or who speak a different language. I'm not saying this is an urgent priority, but the system I'm suggesting would be an improvement with no downside so stop busting my balls and trying to make it personal :P

So, you're suggesting we need a "Meh" option.

While that idea has its merits, never underestimate the capacity of players to demonstrate extremely bad taste. For every one of us who is the type of player who would rather see nice gear we don't need ourselves go to someone who can and would use it vs. break it down into a Fate's worth of GC seals (I had others who passed to thank for all my alt classes having great gear ready to equip at various higher levels after all)- there would be plenty more people who lost a roll and would spend the rest of the dungeon going "Come on gimme gimme gimme I NEED that more and... blah blah blah whine whine whine rage rage rage...". I think the only way for this not to happen is for loot to be locked once it lands in someone's inventory.

However I do wish there were an option to add a fourth tier of roll to have it be like below, which is self-explanatory:

    Need Greed Want Pass

But while I'm on the subject I might as well go all-out, if I were able to design such an option, to further improve this users would be able to customize how their 'Want' rolls worked in Character config- like if I wanted I'd be able to set it where Want would have lower priority than Greed against players who have an alternate class corresponding to the item type unlocked, at or below the item level, but would have Greed priority against those with that class at/above that level. It's hardly more complex than someone deciding what to roll based on manually looking at the classes party members have unlocked, but it would work automatically and not interfere with the mechanics of a regular Need/Greed roll at all.

Here's some examples of a system like that in action, using as example Haukke Manor as a level 20's dungeon via roulette. Party is Bard (50), GLD 29 (having BRD as alt at 50), BLM 50 (BRD as alt at 45) and WHM 50 (ARC as alt at lvl 17). A green bow drops at end of dungeon. Possible scenarios:
    1) Bard decides to take bow for whatever reason- they roll Need, get the bow (this system doesn't impact ability of people to roll Need on own class)
    2) Bard decides bow would be nice to have but would like someone who could use it to have priority vs. someone who's gonna trade for GC seals or desynth, in which Bard would rather do that himself. Loot rolls: WHM rolls Greed (78!), GLD rolls Greed (55!), BLM rolls Want (82!), BRD rolls Want (95!). Outcome- WHM gets weapon for their low level Archer because BRD and BLM had set their personal Want settings to downgrade against those at/below level for that item.
    3) Same as 2, but with these rolls: WHM Greed- (15!), GLD Greed (55!), BLM Greed (34!), BRD Want (92!). Winner = Bard because their 'Want' settings only downgraded their roll priority against the WHM with a lvl 17 ARC, not the other two players with classes ranked above the weapon.

Since in the scenarios above the Bard could have taken the weapon via Need, this just gives them a way to let someone who could actually use it have priority over their own roll, without passing up on it altogether when they're rather have it to turn in for seals or desynth themselves than just pass it to another player who's just going to do the same. There's another possibility of course, the BRD rolling 'Want' and then the highest Greed roll is one of the other players with BRD way above the bow's item level when they could have Needed, but that's a risk we already take when we roll Greed when we could do Need so nothing new there... and a config option for Want to have it conditionally upgrade to Need when available would be a major, possibly exploitable modification to current Need/Greed mechanics, unlike my solution entailing a lower-tier roll that could upgrade to Greed- the current lowest priority roll-at best).

tl;dr-Adding a new roll option for 'Want' that has lower priority than Greed when another person greeding has a class unlocked that can use the item, and is at a lower level than that item, would enable players to pass on more gear to those who can benefit from using it on alts, without forgoing the ability to trade it for GC seals or desynth in favor of someone else who would just do the same thing but isn't as generous in passing unneeded gear for other players' alt classes.

I'll just add that this functionality is in the game already. Just don't roll *or* pass it. If everyone else passes, it will come to you.

The downside is you have to wait for the timer to expire, which a "want" button would help with. But you can still do this. As long as you're not at the dungeon's end, I don't think it's inconsiderate to wait on the timer.
