Yes, a lot of players circumvent the problem by avoiding PUGs as tanks and only take the role when playing with friends. It unfortunately means that tanks are still very rare in public games.

Anyway, there tend to be more elitists at higher levels. Most will comment on gear or how big of a mob you can pull without dying, but all those can be accumulated with time and experience. A lot of the dungeon tricks and trials are just about learning the mechanics. Watching how other tanks do things (using a video or on a dps/healer alt class) is probably the easiest way to improve. If you have a good fc or friends online, they can also point out various tricks that may suit your playstyle. Just take your time and have fun. Eventually, you'll find that only 1 or 2 people every week is actually saying something half-legitimate while everyone else is just posturing.

If you have any specific questions, or if the pressure gets too much, feel free to bring them up on the forums. The tank and healer subforums have some amusing horror story threads and a sympathetic audience for that purpose.

There are a bunch of them in the game and all I suggest is that you ignore them. Remember it's not you it's them.

The main thing to remember is play your job well, then you don't ever meet these "elitists". As long as you're doing well, then no one will ever pull you up, and you won't see the people who complain you're doing bad because you're not doing bad. Simples .

That's true, however, but if you don't have much game experience from previous games you somehow will be "bad" in the beginning (high level dungs etc.). So I recommend, if you are too afraid of getting much critic watch some video guides or read. Which I totattly recommend for going into high level guildhests or raids (especially as a tank =)).

Pay attention to what the game says in its help, tooltips and tutorials and that itself will make you a better player. Unfortunately people skip everything, ignore all of what the tutorials say (Especially the guildhest notification), hit level 50, and are completely idiotic and clueless. You can start reading around the subject over time and more so at high level to learn the specifics on "perfecting" your play.

I mean crap, the GLD quest line teaches you how to tank, the CNJ quest line teaches you to backline and heal.

There's really no excuse to not have a decent understanding of whats up if you're actually taking in the game when you're playing it.

    Slightly offtopic rant there.

Everyone plays to have fun, everyone...
...some really do consider math, lore, game knowledge, dancing, perfect avoidance, or whatever activity they are doing in game fun.

The way I look at it is the difference is scheduling your playtime moves you along one line of the graph, and how serious you take your performance moves you along another, while how you interact with others moves you along a third. Unfortunately others have mislabeled the graph as casual to hardcore along at least two of those lines

You aren't going to get along with everyone you meet. Just brush it off and do your part to make the community better.

What everyone said. But what is your definition of an elitist? Someone one like: omg your gear is weak I sm the best blah blah? As I've ran many instances where some one offers suggestions to a player to better the party add a whole, and then said player gets offended and goes ona rant. Dps was my first job and when I began tank and hlr classes I welcomed suggestions. As I also give them out when I see room for improvement. It's just aggrevating when suggestions are rubbed off causing wipes or what not . Example : running a dungeon and our tank appears to be made of paper bcuz of the dmg they were taking, I checked his gear and it was very low so I figured new player. we all pass on tank gear to help this person. But they refused to equip it and when asked why they will not change their came the elitist rants. This is just my opinion to each his own

Suggestions are always fine with me. I just don't like it when you're fine and they're like, oh you don't have the most bestest gear ever, noob!, blah blah, your stats are bad...etc...
