Well if it helps there is nothing in this game that requires voicecom during raids. It only helps because people get too tunnel visioned and their situational awareness takes a plummet.
For me personally its mostly a distraction.

My coil group are mostly ps4 users who don't have access to voice chat (computer in a different room, no smartphone) so we actually never use it.Looking to see if there are any other players around the server, and how you deal with possible raiding and being asked to get on voice programs.
It's scary for me and I usually end up making some kind of dumb excuse... But im a good player so I know this wont work forever.
It would be much more useful of course, but not impossible so all you have to do is find a group similar to ours that doesn't require for you to use voice chat.
Just figured I'd chime in that they do exist =P
and nothing wrong with making excuses. you don't have to tell anyone about anything personal so a simple excuse (my headphones broke, no mic etc) is fine!

In my experience, I felt that it was better to just mention to people about your hearing early on, especially when you're going to get involved, long term, with a group that uses voice chats regularly.Just thought I would point out... in the case of my friend, no one knew he was deaf... he had never mentioned it. And so we didn't realize we were being really insensitive about him being deaf until he told us why he never came in vent. We all felt absolutely horrible and I think we learned an important lesson that day. What's worse is that I am slightly hard of hearing due to a permanent hole in my eardrum I've had since I was a kid, and I get very frustrated when people get upset at me for not being able to understand them the first time (IRL). I know that having hearing issues is not something people can see or know unless you tell them. So, I should have been more observant regarding my friend who never joined us in vent, and I was kind of disappointed in myself for not realizing it sooner. It's not fair that the burden was on him to say, "Hey, I can't hear you. At all. And I feel left out." But, we stopped using vent as soon as we knew and all was well again... I guess that was the best we could do given the circumstances.

You shouldn't need voice chat in the first place.
I'm deaf and I have been in situations where I was kicked from party for not using voice chat
But I have a static now which I'm really happy with and they all are aware that I'm deaf and happy with me as a dps but my biggest qualm with some of the players is how if you say you're deaf it's the "you're faking it" that pisses me off more than anything cos why would I wanna lie about a disability?!
If the player is deaf, using a voice-chat program is out of the question, for obvious reasons. >__>I don't know why you think it's so scary honestly. I use Ventrilo with a group of people I have only known through Ventrilo for over 10 years (Since Final Fantasy 11 came out on Playstation 2) We all live in separate states but that hasn't hurt our friendship in the slightest. Some audio servers are nothing but grind junkies i'll admit I got lucky winding up with the server I am with now. All I can say to you is just give it a try. Maybe the people are bad and maybe they are not. You won't know where the train is going until you jump on it.
The fear is being immediately kicked out of a raid group if they end up being honest about it because some players only see raiding one way.
If your team is communicating effectively, then you honestly don't have to worry about much of anything. If that communication requires VoIP then so be it; but I know there are some people who have cleared content without using it and have done just fine. Some people will setup macros to signal things to look for during fights which may make it easier than hearing 4+ people talking simultaneously over VoIP programs.
It's nice but it's not at all necessary or essential.
