One word sums it up... Adapt. It's easy to manage mp, you just need to right abilities. Rules to follow:

Always go into passive once you're done casting.
Always use spirit bind in transition phases on bosses.
Always use siphon mp whenever it's up
Always use Stygian spikes on yourself if you are a tanking mage.
Always use your mp regen weapon skill if you have plenty of tp.

Those are just a few options that will help you when grouped up or solo.
