Radeon r9 295x2 crossfireX malfunctioning in FFXIV

I have recently gone from 1 290x to a dual-gpu 295x2 (msi) and it doesn't want to use both Gpus in Ffxiv. One gpu is at 1018mhz but other 300mhz both 100% utilization.

Most Other games and applications are working with crossfire in this configuration just fine.

    System specs:
    Intel 4770k
    Asus Maximus vii hero
    16gb g.skill tridentx 2400
    Msi Radeon r9 295x2
    Samsung 840pro ssd x2
    Asus xonar STX
    Seasonic platinum 1000
    Windows 8.1 x64
    Yamakasi catleap @120hz overclock

I'm using a very common Korean overclocking 1440p monitor with an edid custom resolution to force 120hz. Looks amazing in game while it works.

In order to get crossfire to work in Ffxiv I have to install windows 8.1 without ANY of the following items:
    Intel Rapid Storage tech
    Samsung magician
    Msi afterburner
    Hwinfo64
    ITunes...

That's the list so far. If I avoid installing those crossfire works in game perfectly.

The graphics card was rediculously expensive and I got it mostly to play this game. Please help! Thanks

You got a 295X2 to play FFXIV?!

That is beyond overkill, my 7950 cruises at max settings, I'd want a 4K monitor to play FFXIV with that GPU to justify purchasing it :P

Thanks for the super helpful and uninformed reply. 120FPS vsynced at 1440p takes a lot of muscle. Your 7950 would get about 40FPS at the settings I run at.

Are there any settings that would cause the card to scale frequencies based on load?

Well, no, I've tested with and without power saving options enabled. Other *modern* games and software work properly but directX9 (ffxiv is dx9) benchmarks like Unigine valley only use 1 gpu, switch to directx 11, both gpus kick on. Guess I got my answer. Sucks.

Even PCSX2... an emulator for the playstation 2 has Directx10 support. Can't believe they made this game twice and it's out of date. I guess that's what happens when you try to use hardware from the future on games from the past.

Directx10 was released in 2006... with Vista... People were mad because it broke FFXI. And still... we're stuck on a coding platform from 2004. DX9. Seriously?

Square tech support told me to switch to Windows 7 or return the card, lol.

    Hmmm. Try different drivers?
    Try creating a crossfire profile.

full screen mode without a capped frame rate.

All totally reasonable suggestions but unfortunately I've tried all the basic stuff and then everything else I could possibly think of. Unfortunately My choice Of driver revisions is very limited. I've spent hours on the phone with msi. The problem lies in directX9 and windows 8.1 not being an ideal match.

Square Enix support told me if I downgraded to win 7 it would fix the problem and it did.

I'm holding off on upgrading my OS until after the DX11 FFXIV engine is released.
