What you are saying is to be kind to truly new players in mmos. the ones that have never, ever picked up an mmo and they roll tank as their first class just cause they heard from their friends/older sibling that they are the most sought out classes. there is a reason tanks and healers are the most sought out classes in any mmo. the responsibility of it. if they cant rise to the challenge then why they are doing it? there is an overabundance of casual tanks that do jack and dont take advice from anyone. its not 4/5 who take advice. its more like 1/5 who do and i see it all the time when im running healer. then we get moaners in the forums and a buff to a class just because nowadays we like to be spoonfed, and then we moan that there is not enough content cause we rushed it within the spoonfeeding period. beautiful. i coultn care about this discussion, its already a feeding contest. just dont pass new mmo players as someone who needs to be pampered. not when they playing a pivotal role in the game

Where the hell did the fun in games go?

I was a big fan of this ideology until about 10 years ago when I stepped into my first party.
There's a lot of fun to be had in games. Reading a guide doesn't make you a professional. Similarly, getting matched with someone who knows nothing of his class or role isn't fun for the 3 other people who are stuck with you. If you're queueing as a DPS, that's a good 10+ minute wait that just went to waste because of an incompetent tank.
I recently started partying with a WAR. Went into my first dungeon with only general experience of tanking in various other games. The results were relatively disastrous. I had no idea how to manage my TP and, as a result, found myself running dry when I needed to OP a pack.
Didn't take more than browsing a guide to learn the basics of TP and a few minutes of practice to effectively use it.

tl;dr if being an idiot is fun for you than do it on your own time

Have you never done a first run of content that you and your friends have not seen before without using a guide?

There is fun in being among the first to run the content, "no spoiler" runs extend the shelf life of this fun. Sadly not everyone can run content with their friends and must run content with puggles for their first time, if they want to see it at all.

Most people are fine to run and communicate with in game.

Nah. I don't believe in pampering people. I do believe in giving them some helpful tips if they are obviously having difficulty, though. I'm not going to get mad at a newbie in a low level dungeon for not quite having a handle on how his class works. He's a newbie. By definition, he is new to his role. The first few dungeons are simple because they're learning experiences. I'm sure I was terrible in my first dungeon despite having an understanding of basically what a tank does and having read through my skill descriptions.

People that respond to my helpfulness with "Don't tell me how to play my class!!!" can get bent, though. Always funny when the tank tells me "You're a scholar, what do you know about tanking?!" when my main is PLD.

Kind of a minor rant about tanks that refuse to adapt to their parties abilities/learn any new strategies/whatever...

I don't get people who don't know how to take criticism and/or don't have at least a basic understanding of the mechanics of other classes. My first love is the Paladin, but since the group I play with most is an FC of a handful of mostly casual players (friends from work, friends of friends, etc.), I learn most of the content through guides and DFs. I've always been open to criticism/suggestions when they are productive, and generally avoid playing the blame game when a party lacks the DPS or heals even when they start blaming the tanks for everything.

Occasionally I'll wind up in a PUG with a level 50 paladin/warrior when I'm in a LL DF with another class, and they'll be doing something stupid like pulling with shield lob followed by provoke, or they won't use enough flash/OP in a dungeon to keep hate, won't cycle their combos, and won't mark targets, but then blame DDs for getting hate just because the DD had the audacity to assume that the warrior was going to maintain emnity on the first target they pulled.

I figured that kind of thing would go away when I got to level 50 dungeons, but I wound up doing AK as a i60ish WHM to work towards my relic after not playing the class for a month or so. I was super rusty, and was having trouble keeping up. The guy kept doing these huge pulls without giving me any time to regain MP between them, we wiped twice on trash pulls, and when I suggested that maybe we should slow down, he said something to the effect of "I haven't had to do small pulls on AK in months, you must be new to the game." and then kept doing the same thing he was doing. The first wipe was my fault, and I was kind of snarky/stressed out when I asked him to slow down, but still, what kind of attitude is that to have?

But who in their right mind would think "Well, I know I can handle this, so why should I slow down just to accommodate some noobs who don't know how to heal?"

Huge pulls are so amazingly fun... as long as your healer and DPS are willing and able to keep up with it. If they can't or won't (some people don't like SR's), then it's just an exercise in frustration for everyone.

Some people just have something to prove, I guess. The epeen is strong with that one.

Pretty much this in my case. I can watch videos until I'm blue in the face but some of us learn better rushing in swords swinging and axes blazing.

Besides, I find that respect generally works both ways.
I respect my group, they respect me. They might not LIKE what I do as a tank but as long as there's no reason for the blame game to start, dungeons usually go smoothly.
