You'll be able to back peddle on the menu screen so you can see all your current settings. Unfortunately you'll have to write them down so you can input the information under new character to save it. You can back all the way out to the start menu though on the character creation page, to save your current skin first before editing the changes. Just make sure you click new character when doing that.
Once saved you can now safely edit your playable character to whatever you wish and not worry about trying to recreate the old skin. And like Mahri said you can create your new look ahead of time and just load the save data for the appearance you want to use.
