Does your old character design get saved? So you can easily access it, if you want to change back?

I've made a lot of alterations to it with the salon person...and well...I'm a bit weary now, if I change to something and grow to hate it..

You are asked to load existing design data or start over from scratch. You can't even load your current design on the editor, if you made any aesthetician adjustments.

Correction: It will only not load aesthetician-only effects (i.e. certain hair and face paint), and revert instead to defaults. The rest of the character will load as they are.

If you want to save that, it should ask if you want to save when you go to confirm, regardless of whether or not you made changes. You may then cancel out of the confirmation to continue recustomizing.

You'll be able to back peddle on the menu screen so you can see all your current settings. Unfortunately you'll have to write them down so you can input the information under new character to save it. You can back all the way out to the start menu though on the character creation page, to save your current skin first before editing the changes. Just make sure you click new character when doing that.
Once saved you can now safely edit your playable character to whatever you wish and not worry about trying to recreate the old skin. And like Mahri said you can create your new look ahead of time and just load the save data for the appearance you want to use.
