    Locking on to a target

Any practical purpose for this? The only time I've used it is either by accident or when I want to lock on to another player so I can speedily run around them in circles.

I can't see how this could every be useful since it lowers your movement speed when moving backwards from your target.

I assume you mean "Focus Target"?

This isn't necessarily beneficial during the beginning of the game, but in end game, it becomes vital.
You'll need to generally focus target on the boss (not always) in situations where you'll target something else so you can still see the boss' cast timers and hp (among other things).

I use this in T1 and T5 mostly, but different jobs will have different use for it. Any character or npc can be focus targeted. The possibilities are continuous.

its good for phys dps as when they move left and right to dodge so they are always facing the target. they will continue the auto attacks instead of having no auto attacks while running around un locked on target.

otherwise, i disable this feature on my controller as i main heals, and sometimes auto locking gets me in trouble lol

Other than for running circles around someone or something, it really has no uses.

Maybe it's something only on the PS3/PS4. Focus Target is different from "locking on" which annoyingly makes you move slower when moving backwards from your locked target.

No you can do it on the PC as well. I liked to use it on the PS4 occasionally cuz I didn't really have to bother with the camera so much. On the PC I don't really mess with it.

You can use it strafe left and right more precisely. If you need to dodge back, you un target and run back. Simple.

I use it mainly for bosses so I can orient myself better.

Is this really necessary for auto attacks to continue? I have been leveling pugilist lately and never use target lock, and while moving between rear/flank positions for the damage bonus, I see myself doing auto attacks even when I am sideways to the target. I am on PS4 btw.

I use it with my archer, kind of looks better when your actually shooting at the target, not flailing magical arrows that still somehow hit target when shot in the opposite direction.

It's very nice for melee dps because of the auto-attacks as mentioned, despite what people say they contribute to a heft amount of damage, especially on mnk. I also use it in fights where there is a lot of moving around and I lose track of people, like in Crystal Tower. If i target them and lock on i can figure out where the heck they are then unlock.

It's useful to use if you can get used to un-locking when you need to move backwards but if you aren't a melee DPS then you're fine just disabling it entirely. Also an extra tip - for a good amount of enemies you can stand slightly farther back/slightly forward and give yourself some extra distance to run out of their AOEs. It might help you out while practicing using lockon if you choose to keep it available.
