Japanese is easier to learn than English, like, way easier. The hard part is reading/writing but they'll understand fine if you just use Hiragana/Katakana instead of Kanji or use Romaji (English is taught in schools).

You are xenophobic. You joined a JP party and said "I don't speak Japanese" as if you were expecting them to communicate solely in English for your benefit. And now you're wanting segregated servers just because you're unwilling to try and communicate without using English. Auto-translate feature works well enough for parties...Behests on my server are usually completed 100% with auto-translate.

It also helps if you get on at UK/NA times and not Eastern EU/Asia times.

who said i used <I dont speak japanese> to them speak english? i did? where? Stop placing words in my mouth. I said it coz i dont speak any japanese, that all. if they want to say: OK, ok for me, if they want to talk international language, ok for me, they learn some english at school, i didnt learn any japanese on mine.

Again, WHERE i said i want separated servers, guy STOP placing words on my mouth. And if i used Autotranslate to say i cant speak japanese is to them USE autotranslate like i did.

Btw how do you write using hiragana in this game do you use some 3rd pt software to do it?

What Raj said is true learning another language is not easy as you can probably tell from my numerous grammar errors =D

I probably could only write simple phrases like "that guy", "yes/no" and "run" in Japanese but it would be cool if there was some way to write using Hiragana that I know. Besides it would be good practice in learning new words. Ofcourse nothing beats school teaching (4 days of Japanese/week ugh), but being able to use what you know would be a good motivation to my studies.

So can you only write in Japanese with JP copy of XIV and a Japanese keyboard or is there a western workaround out there?

You need to enable IME for Japanese character input support in windows. If you look it up on google there are numerous tutorials of how to do this. No you don't have to have a JP copy or a Japanese keyboard. It does require quite a bit of functions as their alphabet is larger than our own, I personally find it easier to use a combination of auto-translate and a list of game terms/common phrases that should have been included in Auto-translate I have compiled with the aid of our leader who speaks Japanese fluently; which I then paste in as my response (I find it is quicker this way).

If you would like I could see about putting them up here or in the public forum of our linkshell's website or someone might be able to point you to a better collection elsewhere.

But, on topic: I've grouped with JP several times, and with my friend at translate.google.com I can generally get a grasp of what they're saying. I've only been booted once, only because the PT lead was a xenophobe. He said "外人" (gaijin, or foreigner) shortly before I got booted. As a general rule if you can put forth *some* effort to understand most are willing to work with you. (The opposite seems to be true as well. Admittedly, it doesn't seem as prevalent as it was in XI when I played.)
I just want to say that http://www.excite.co.jp/world/english/ is a MUCH better tool than google translate.

Thank you I took a look of that and now I'll just need to get my computer with an installed hiragana set. I hope I don't get tempted to use that thing for homework XD

Most kanji is still completely unrecognizable to me in small font format. @__@() it all goes into a mush at that scale in my eyes!

If at all possible this would be great. I've recently started to learn the language but I'm quite a ways away from effectively communicating at the current moment. That list would be an excellent thing to have if you wouldn't mind posting it or posting a link to it.

I will try and straighten it up and post it sometime tonight after my linkshell's events.

I've asked for Regional servers ever since beta, and SE even thought about them, until beta ended.

I'll get the link to my thread in a minute.

    Edit: http://ffxiv.zam.com/forum.html?foru...92063227414682

The main reason I wanted regional servers are due to distance latency being absolute murder on skillful play.

The second reason is the language barrier. On my server, you see almost no one chatting in public, and the only time you see any shouts are when you're in Ul'dah, but they're only party advertisements.

Many people (myself included, even though I have a minute understanding of Japanese) feel intimidated by other language speakers, especially when there is a high level of elitism among them and they do not want to bring any English speaking people into their parties. It was the same in FFXI and hasn't really changed one bit.

I like the international servers, since it means that peak times will be spread out some (things might sell overnight, etc...). It also gives me a little more reason to brush up on/practice my Japanese, since I've forgotten most of it by now. Sometimes though, I just don't want the hassle of trying to translate, and would prefer just to speak in English. I'm sure many Japanese people feel the same way; it's not always xenophobia, sometimes it's just a hard day at work with the following mental exhaustion. I've also heard that some Japanese feel like their English isn't perfect, so they hesitate to speak it, while others don't speak much at all. I know I was taught Spanish for 4 years in high school, but can't do much beyond ordering beer and counting.

As for the red mobs... "Akai mono dake onegaishimasu" might work. It doesn't always have to be a perfect sentence to convey the meaning.

And i know some poeple will say: ohh one day i played with them and i have no problem.. ok i did it on FFXI too but 1 day is not enough to be polite. Seriously i feel discriminated by not being able to speak Japanese.

What to do? allow it and play a game with 2 "factions" where u join oriental or not oriental people?
    Hahahha!

    This is so true.

It's hard to play with JP players if you cant speak the language. So you just end up not playing with them. So that's 50% of the server you cant even play with.

Stupid decision by SE just so they dont have to outsource their awful servers.
