Square has always been really big on references, but with FFXIV they reached a whole new level! I'm not gonna include the obvious ones, like Biggs and Wedge, or Cid, which are a part of the FF tradition.

The list may contain minor spoilers.

FF: Characters from 1.0 are referred to as Warriors of Light.
FF II: The Scions use the password "wild rose", like the rebels in FFII.
FF III: Concept of the Crystal Tower and its bosses.
FF V: In the main story, there's a reference to a Krile, who is one of the Students of Bladesion.
FF VI: Magitek mount.
FF VII: Seventh Heaven in Revenant's Toll is a reference to Tifa's bar in Midgar. Also, the names of the healer limit breaks are named after Aerith's limit breaks.
FF VIII: You can make a character with Zell's tattoo. Gunblades.
FF IX: Mail system resembles Mognet.
FF XII: The Garlean armors resemble the Judges. Also, the Ascians worship Zodiark, who was an esper in FF XII and FFT.

XI and XIV also share the playable races, unfortunately. I wish they had been more separated, like the other FF chapters. Hopefully the new race will make that feeling go away a bit.

Actually they aren't QUITE the same, but yeah from a distance it looks like they're the same. Limsa the pirate port is quite different from all the XI cities though and it's my favourite. Always been a pirates fan! ^_^

Tanaka was one of if not the best producer/designer/directors that SE ever had

Except he didn't direct any of those games you mentioned besides the remake. And directing a remake doesn't take much, most everything is there. He's simply overrated, most of those games would've still been what they were except for XI without him.
