better yet, how much gil did it ended up costing them?
I had saved 1m for the weapon but I start to think I will need 10 times that amount... crit materia prices through the roof...

1 million definitely won't be enough if you plan to go with BiS. Determination and critical hit rate tier IVs are around 200k (at least on my server) You need 19 and you're bound to get some failures when you fuse too.
200,000 x 19 = 3,800,000
You're going to be dealing with 60% and 50% infusion rates at the end. So 3.8 million would be the minimum. And that's just for the tier IVs. Even the IIIs can be pricey with how many you need.
It's hard to tell if materia prices will increase or decrease as time goes on. Demand for the tier IVs will likely increase as people reach that level of Novus.
Unless you're rich, I really don't recommend going for 31 determination and 44 critical hit rate. 8 determination and 11 critical hit rate is hardly worth 4 million gil. The dps loss would be marginal. Probably less than 1% difference.
If you want to avoid the Tier IVs you can do
23 determination
33 critical hit rate
19 accuracy/skill speed/spell speed/piety
1 million gil should be enough for that.

It's not as simple as you think. You have a low chance of spirtbonding a IV and low chance of getting the right materia you want. And you need to get at least 19 of them. Sure, it's possible but very time consuming. Possibly more time consuming than Novus itself.

I'm happy that I started to save up materia since 1.0 relict quest ^^
Needed a weapon with 2 materia in it, the chance for the second materia was around 18% and if it failed the whole weapon was destroyed. And alone 1 of the 2 materia costed around 2-4m gil ^^

It is as simple as I think, 60k myth is what you need to get all 75 alexandrites if you're not gonna do anything else but dungeons. That's 600 dungeons runs, 600 dungeons where you could have, at the very least, spiritbond with your accessories (so that elitist won't complain), and if say it takes 5 runs to completely spiritbond a whole set, is 1 materia per run. It may be RNG but 600 materia is a lot which not only you can use, but sell for gil to buy the specific materia you want, and that's not even including the gil from the actual dungeon, or the crafting mats you can sell OR use to make i70s that guarantee a level IV (you'd have to do CT or coil for this though).
I've already made over a million this week alone, spiritbonding while doing dungeons and CT, that's not even including the materia I use for my personal use, so as it stands, spiritbonding on top of what you're already doing is the better choice. This is quest is gonna take time, it's meant to be that way, and the only way to do it in less time is to cut cost and kill to birds with one stone. Simply put, if you're not gonna be efficient with what you do, it's just gonna be harder on yourself at the end of the day.
