That's because it is a PC. It's pretty much straight PC hardware almost. Also, a keyboard is the standard form of communication in an MMO, always has been. Even XI on the PS2, you used a keyboard. Basically having to use a keyboard, does not make it PC like. Written communication, or rather typed in this case, is far simpler to work with on electronic devices of all kinds.
What I see is that people see it as a console game before they see it as an MMO, when it's the other way around. It's an MMO first, console(and PC of course) game second.
We had a temporary BRD last week to fill the spot for our static BRD who was away for 12 days. We got all the way to T9. This BRD didn't have any VOIP.
Back when I played Team Fortress 2 competitively, my team had 2 women, one being the leader and the other a co-leader. They made it a point to keep this fact a secret and it reared it's ugly head one day. We were getting ready for a match and somebody accidentally said to the other team "She's AFK right now" when they were asking for her attention. The verbal abuse escalated to the point where we had to report the other team to UGC League and the team was disqualified. It was one of the most immature spectacles I've seen yet
It will never happen, for all the right reasons.
The only people you should ever VoIP with are members of your own FC/LS or a group that advertises this as a requirement. If this was foolishly added into the game people would be ostracized or kicked from groups on a regular basis for not turning it on or having it. People that do not know you and will likely not encounter you again have little incentive to stay their tongue should something go wrong in the fight. Many of the Pro-VoIP people here obviously have not encounter enough of the wrong kind of players, my old FC had a TeamSpeak server but it worked because we had firm control over our group. Anyone who yelled or got hostile with another member was out for good, period.
However I cannot assume a random teen/angry adult is going to communicate in an adult manner and handle things like a team, this problem would be greatly exacerbated once Frontlines came out as PvP can get fairly intense. It's easier to log grievous offenses in text, but they cannot feasibly monitor voice chat for everyone so anything said there is basically no real evidence of someone acting like a violent moron.
I fully support SE's decision on the matter because the cons carry more weight than the pros in this situation. Any hardcore FC/group will be able to still use VoIP programs and those that elect not to will be able to continue to do so without dire consequence.

Just your friendly neighborhood elezen
People have had bad experiences with trash talk aimed at them due their gender mainly because of the genre they were playing when it happened and the audience the said genre attract. Just check the video provided in this thread, hear the voices and you will get an idea of the creeps that play that genre, with (very) rare exceptions. I say no to voip in this game because of the stress the servers would be put under. As of now people have enough lag and disconnects. And I'm afraid our sweet community can't really refrain themselves from misbehaving.
