Depends how you look at it in all honesty. Lore wise it could easily be explained away as the 'X' evolved differently from 'Y'.

Actually, the older the rat, the more scaled like the rat's tail becomes. Also certain parasites and fungi can cause a rats tail to become scaly as well. But generally a well groomed rat and younger rats tend to have very smooth tails.

Why does she have to be an existing race, or based on an existing race? They created Mithra, Galka, Tarutaru, Roegadyn, Miqote and Lallafel when they never existed before, so why not make Yugiri a new race just for FFXIV?

Mithra = Miqo'te
Tarutaru = Lallafel
Galka = Roegadyn
Elvaan = Elezen
Hume = Hyur

Zilart = Ascians
Padjal = hrm... not really sure, but my money is on Prishe herself specifically, if only due to the not aging thing.
Empire = no equivelency as it wasn't really used in Final Fantasy XI

point is, there is a lot of similarities between Final Fantasy XI, and Final Fantasy XIV as far as races and stuff goes. But Yugiri isn't one of them. That said, based on just looking at a picture of her tail, it is pretty clear that it looks a lot like a Rat's tail.

Eh, honestly her tail looks very lizard/dragon-like as rats dont have those protruding buttscales at the base of the tail and Yugiri's tail scales are two toned: brighter on upper side and darker for the underside as well as different scale type for the underside which is not rat-like at all.

Its really not likely its a rat race and no chance its a bunny race.

I expect something like a lizard / dragon woman with horns ... those two things under the hood are a bit rigid to be bunny ears.

Plus, if I remember it correctly, during the game she says something about being hidden in order to not scare Eorzean since they may have never seen those of her kind. So I don't think the new race will be "cute" ...
