Very first sentence in this link says: "The Warrior (せんし, Senshi?), also known as the Fighter, is the most versatile member of the Warriors of Light in the original Final Fantasy."
I said in the original it was fighter, and I was right, they changed the name in later versions, you were the one that said it was originally warrior, and it wasn't, at least not here in the states.

Looks to me that the Japanese version (which is the very first version) is Warrior (せんし, Senshi= means Warrior in English) while the english is Fighter but keep the derp alive!

Sadly, he's correct. It was originally named Warrior (according to the FF Japanese wiki).

(Warrior => Knight)
(Thief => Ninja)
(Monk => Super Monk (haha))
(Red Magic Artist => Red Mage) - weird one to translate
(White magic artist => white mage)
So in the very first implementation, Warrior became Knight. Which based on the fact that it could use low level White magic, is what we in the English world came to know as Paladin. We know based from the ability to play FFXIV in Japanese that Paladin is not called Paladin in the Japanese version but Knight. But on that same token, I don't believe any of the Japanese would care if Thief was relegated to a class that directly upgrades into Ninja.
