Sorry, but that is totally irrevelant...MNK tanked in salvage because they were the only ones able to generate enough enmity by damage without a proper weapon equipped.
Once you unlocked your skill and gear, it's back to the old tank jobs.

I can't think of a good reason to bring a PLD or NIN to salvage.
You wasted a slot bringing a PLD or a NIN to Salvage? What, did you also bring 8 man groups or something? MNK tank from start to finish, including bosses. Say hello to 5-6 man runs with boss kill included. Say hello to split parallel runs. I do admit that at times we also used SAM tanks in Salvage, but our MNKs were better geared. My group even used a BST for LAC on a 5/6 man party, but that's for another day.
Outside Salvage, we used MNKs to tank many things of relevance. Those NMs that you popped with the photograph points, any monsters you had to farm outside like Yo'Vras (the sea UFOs), low manning some jailers like Faith, trio Limbus for Omega triggers (MNK, RDM, BLU) and really, several other things where they excelled as tanks.
A job is what it can do, until a system that holds your hand tells you otherwise. This is the case of FFXIV, but not the case of FFXI.Lol Mnk is not a tank, it was used as a tank, and so was nin. These jobs in ff14, under a system which specifies a jobs role, are dps. In ff11 the subjob system together with the flaw that hate was mainly determined by damage meant many jobs could fill the role of a tank. Current ff14 is very different as jobs have to fill a set role. I did love the variety of 11, but what you end up with is the majority of the population playing a few jobs (or just MNK).
FFXIV has been structured from the ground up. Tanks are tanks because they have been 100% tailored to be so, DPS are such because they have been tailored for that, etc. There is zero flexibility in FFXIV and the current cross skill system we have is but a useless mockery. This is both good and bad, depending on what kind of gameplay you are looking for. It allows developers to balance content better, but it also stops any kind of player generated strategies.
FFXIV is a game where you figure out how the developers expected you to win an encounter and then you repeat that. There's few exceptions, but they are all mostly exploits that have either been accepted (current Divebomb strategy) or patched out already.
