Juuuust a question or a few...

So I'm returning to the game after a good few months. I'm a level 23 Pugilist, and I have literally no idea what I'm doing. I mean I'm just doing quests. I have no direction. I remember working towards a new class? An upgrade path or something? Pugilists become something else or whatever, I remember that much. I'm not sure about the housing thing, at all, I don't know a thing about these guilds or groups or whatever they're called in this game. Crafting is a book in an alien language to me, and I'm just lost. I just bought 2 months for the game, and I feel it was a mistake because I feel like I'm just questing, I have nothing really to work towards.

Can anyone point me in a direction? I'm sure there's end game content and such that I'd love to get and what not. Maybe tell me what the most populated NA server is or something so I'm not totally alone like I feel?

    Anything helpful is appreciated. <3

At level 30 Pugilist and level 15 lancer you get your job of Monk. It is a advanced form of Pugilist. Housing is only for Free Companies at the moment which is what guilds are in this game.

My suggestion is find a free company that caters to new players so you have people to play with and help out. End game starts at 50, you just need to follow the quests and level up. Once you hit 50 and unlock the raids and dungeons things get fun and more open.

Crafting is a confusing animal to many, me included. You don't need it if you are part of a good free company many will be happy to help you out with what you need.

Free companies are server based. The easiest thing to do really is ask in /shout if there are any FCs for helping low level players. When someone Whispers you, examine his Free Company (either by right clicking his name, or typing his name in Player Search, can't remember) and see if they have a half decent number of players. You don't want to be joining an FC that has like 10 people most likely.

What? I mean, servers are shared regardless of platform, meaning PC, PS3 and PS4 users play together. There are no platform-based servers. Upgrading from PS3 to PS4 is always a win in every single way.

Then I'm just having shit luck. I don't hardly see anyone, and party missions have been a pain in the ass for me. I can't FIND anyone. It's like everyone decided to play at once and went up in level together except for me.

What server should I play on?

Hi! I'll breakdown your post and explain each part as best as possible.

You should be doing your class quests available at your guild every 5 levels (PUG is in Ul'dah, across from the Immortal Flames area). At lvl30, you get a quest that is locked out unless you also have Lancer at lvl15. Once you meet both of those criteria, you complete that quest, and unlock the Monk Job Crystal, which you have to equip to become the monk Job. The distinction between a job and a class:
A class, such as PUG, has access to 10 cross class abilities at lvl50, from any other class. Jobs, such as MNK, has access to 5 from only Lancer and Marauder. However, MNK has abilities exclusive to it, and gets a stat increase compared to PUG. When it comes to the grand majority of content, your Job is more useful than your class, as it is significantly stronger.

There are 2 main "Guild" type groupings: Linkshell (LS) and Free Company (FC). You can have many LS', but only one FC. FC's have access to abilities that affect everyone within it, such as a small experience points boost, lowered teleport costs, etc. They also have access to a chest storage that is accessible to all members only. Leaders can create different ranks, with different roles/rules applied to them. Finally, FC's, who have saved enough money, are the only ones who can build a House in one of the 3 Housing districts with a choice of 3 different sizes (S, M and L). For the most part, this is cosmetic, however you can have your chest in there, a Moogle Mail box, and 2 vendors (including a repair NPC).

An LS, because you can have many of them, are typically used for chat. However, people have found many uses for them, such as creating alliances between FC's and running Roleplaying events through them. Though they have none of the benefits of an FC, do not underestimate the ability of an LS to become something great for a lot of people. I myself run both an LS and an FC, and the un-restrictive nature of the LS allows us to have many awesome members that we run a lot of content with.

Crafting is fairly simple: You equip the necessary tool, join the guild, just like your other classes, and use materials you find from vendors, or from enemies to create new items. It works very similarly to a job, in that sense; you complete quests (called levequests, I'd look into these in general if I were you), except instead of killing enemies, you craft items. You can gain some abilities from any other crafting class as well, so it's nice to have more than one to at least lvl15. Also, crafters are able to meld materia to certain equipment, which is important later, and they are now able to repair their own gear beyond 100%.

Crafting is not incredibly necessary to be successful later in the game, but can be quite fun to accomplish. Especially the classes that do not involve armor, such as Culinarian and Alchemist, because they will always have a use for their items.

I'm not sure on most populated NA server, but the social aspect of the game won't really come out until you start running dungeons, which are required for the lvl15+ Story Quests. Stick with the Story and Class quests as you go along, remember that some cross-class abilities are important so look into those for you job (Invigorate from LNC is incredibly important later). Lvl50 is where the majority of the coolest content exists, but take your time getting there. Take in the lessons you learn from dungeons and everything the little popups tell you. Read your Traits and Abilities in order to truly understand your role and job. But most importantly, have fun

    EDIT:

Time of day really depends. If you are mostly on during the day, it can sometimes be difficult to find people because of work/school hours. NA most active times are around 6-11PM EST because of that. I'm not sure of the population of Cactuar or where to find that kind of information. My best advice would be to go to your server's section of the forum, or ask around in game for any FC's or LS' that fit your usual play hours.
