I was in a similar situation as you when I started healing in this game. I absolutely LOATHED healing in XI, my first party where I was delegated to main heals in XI was a really bad experience (RDM level 30ish in yuhtunga mandy party). I wanted to support/DD, not be heals (and haste/refresh) only. Immediately went to DNC after that horrid experience and didn't look back until I had level 75 dancer (I started XI in '07 or '08).
That said, in other games I always liked healing and support, as well as attacking. Which is why RDM was my go-to at first, jack of all trades and all. (eventually got both RDM and DNC to 99 though, a couple years after aby came out).
I chose bard when I started XIV, closest thing to support in the game lol. I was being pressured by a couple friends to go WHM, but I wouldn't hear it. Healing in XI soured any potential for me to try healing in XIV. Eventually after I beat the story and all and watched some WHMs do their thing in dungeons, I made an alt character. Leveled WHM on her some to see how it is. I got her to 50 and then promptly leveled it on my main (it's my main job now lol).
Also the base class is what levels up, so if you level SCH to 50, you will have 50 SMN as well.

Wait,...wot? Seriously. So if I decided to lvl either SMN or SCH, depending on which, the other would gain lvl's as well? I would have to have the soulstone unlocked I would imagine. I know that when you level the job, the base get's the exp as that is how it reads in the logs, but I had no idea it worked like that for ACN (SMN,SCH). That kinda makes it more enticing to do so.
So WHM hit fiddy over the weekend and I am comfortable with the job. The hardest healing I have had to do as of yet was Aurum Vale. That got pretty intense at times. My feat in there was on coincounter, seeing as he/she is pretty easy in terms of scripted moves, both DPS ate it a couple times. Me and a friend tank handled it well. I was able to get them up, twice each lol, and we continued for the win. Holy in there is awesome as well.
I finished the day off with a CT run just to see how it is. It is definitely different from a heals perspective. A lot of stuff going on in there. Hardest part there was KB. Keeping regens up is the key I think for dealing with the electricity. Medica two is nice there for the added regen. I am pretty excited to get WHM into some coils, Ultima ex, and primal runs. Just need to gear up a bit.

Yeah Medica 2 is really useful in the KB fight, at higher ilvls you can almost fully rely on it to heal your party (aside from tanks on IG and KB). Often I'll pop it and help kill the bombs and pop aero and aero 2 on KB.I finished the day off with a CT run just to see how it is. It is definitely different from a heals perspective. Although WHM tip for the KB fight; don't pop Medica 2 until after the Iron Giant is under control. I say this from experience lol (both from healing and being the IG tank). Shroud of Saints is your best friend if you get hate from any mob and people are trying to get it off you but are having trouble (popping SoS reduces your current enmity, making life easier for both you and the tank).

Sorry for the long time since the post. Anyway, If you are stacking Determination, you will eventually want to build towards the Allagan set. The Astral Ring is i70 and you can stack enough materia (refer to comments for materia caps) in to it to turn it exceed an i90. Keep in mind materia is fairly expensive right now with the Novus, so you may buy either the daystar and get the garuda ex rings before you can afford it.
As an Arcanist 30, you will qualify for both SCH and SMN (since you have both THM and CNJ at 50). The biggest issue is that it is difficult to min/max both since they share a base class and thus, attribute stats. So you will see ACN with 30 points in INT, ACN with 30 pts in MND, and those split 15INT/15MND. It all depends on personal preference for that. Just know that in terms of return, INT gives more damage to SMN than MND gives to SCH heals (approx. 50 more hp healed for 30 MND).
Aurum Vale is pretty brutal on the healers, but I'm glad to see you managed to clear it. You can probably handle most dungeons up to Ampador Keep that way.
CT is seriously a pile of fun. I'm glad you managed so well with it.

Very nice info all. I was unable to get in game at all this past week. SO I feel as if I am behind a bit. Should get back on track this week though. Gotta get caps done and then decide on spending order, PLD is my main. My usual order was PLD, BLM< DRG, then BRD is like the red headed stepchild. Getting whatever other stuff drops lol. But now WHM is in the mix. Kinda stinks having limited playtime but a few jobs that need gearing lol.
I'll update shortly.
