Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't it because they wanted to give us "more" ways to obtain alexandrite and to take players' feedback into account?

When we were planning to release this in patch 2.25, the means to obtain Alexandrite were very limited, and one suggestion from Takai was to make it purchasable with Allagan tomestones of mythology. As we were unable to create new means to acquire Allagan tomestones of mythology, we decided to push it back a patch to work on more ways for players to acquire Alexandrite

That's from the live letter summary and I can't be bothered to find the quote about taking feedback into consideration, but let's just assume that that's exactly what they did. Let's also keep in mind that the biggest complaint was how much everyone hated grinding FATES.

Wouldn't that mean that the only means of obtaining alexandrite they had originally planned for was FATE grinding and that, in line with player feedback, the "new means" of acquiring them would be myth purchases (confirmed in the quote yet also another common complaint) and the daily quest?

So... it took over a month to create one repeatable quest that isn't even a unique quest and to add maps to the myth vendor's inventory...? You can't be serious.

Yes, you can add also the fact that we lose approximately 35 free alexandrite because of the one month delay :P

Just be glad it not another mind boggling FATES Grind fest! Seriously, I'm getting so sick of SE repeatedly using FATES for everything. I can't believe SE was actually planning to do another FATES grind with even a lower drop rate for the next Novus Quest. Good thing it was delay to have more option available, even though it boring and more old contents until 2.3.

The LIVE letter gave me the impression that, originally, the only way to get Alexandrite would have been mythology.

This. Also keep in mind it would have been about 3 weeks instead of a month but they had technical issues at their office that delayed the entire patch by a week. It may not even have taken them the whole time to develop the new method but considering they likely came to the decision right before the last patch that meant by default that Novus couldn't land until 2.28. Otherwise they would have had to make it i's own special patch.
