+1 to OP.
It's pretty funny from a healer's perspective, but yeah, some mdef is indeed needed for the DRG.

Thank god someone noticed this, I thought I was crazy for a second when I saw how absurd the damage I took was to magic spells.
The difference in magical damage received between a DRG and a WHM is roughly 10%. Tested it on 500 hits on water elementals in Urth's Gift. (Average of 127.5 on WHM and 141.66 on DRG. -10% damages on WHM)
Let's say a skill is enough to kill you in one shot (haven't tried T9, can't say!), so... 6k damages? It's not really a liability but you do require extra heals, especially after megaflare. The cure 3 isn't going to top you off. I also died with 5.8k hp and stoneskin+succor to megaflare because I was out of sacred soil and didnt think I'd die when people are living with 4.xk hps.
A DRG would receive 6k while a WHM would receive around 5k4. You might not survive, but I'm pretty positive he wouldn't either, because of his lower max HP.
If he was in Sacred Soil, which grants an additional 10% damage reduction, the WHM would only receive around 4860, and thus might survive. Now if you were in Sacred Soil, you'd receive only 5400 and survive too. Barely, but hey, alive is alive.
Also, we have Second Wind for most of these cases (ohai self heal for ~1k), and could use X-Potion/Hi-elixir. A nice mantra at the right moment could help as well.
The fact that some dragoon cleared T9 tells me it's not such a big problem. The only problem would be if you got one shotted and had no way to survive, which is not the case.
I main a healer and had absolutely NO idea. All I knew is that Dragoons died WAY more often than most other classes. Thanks for the heads up, I'll be a little more forgiving and stop shaking my head when I see a DRG either spike in damage or die where others wouldn't, and give them some more lovin' with the Adlo.
What was the magic defense difference between your whm and your drg? It felt like it was more than 10% to me but it could be confirmation bias or variance in megaflare damage. The difference in magical damage received between a DRG and a WHM is roughly 10%. I mean, it's not a problem that's really relevant enough to impede progress but taking extra damages annoying at times.
Noticed this on the first day I got the DRG class. I was beginning to see some odd stats on gear that had decent Phys defense, then halved M.Def. I thought: "well this just means the stats on my gear will be making up for it right?" Sort of.
The way they balanced the DRG gear was that your armor would give you enough vitality and stats to off-set the Defense loss you had, which might work since we're a Melee class and would be in Melee range a lot. But we're not tanking anything, and we should already be behind or to the sides of a target nearly 99% of the time, which means that Phys defense is just kinda there for Soloing things. Then we have the halved M.Def, and most unavoidable attacks are magic based most often, so DRGs instantly get hit harder most often because of it. Monks may be squishy sometimes too, but not too this degree if B4B is accidentally up on one, we will most often die.
By the time I had DRG to 45, I was looking more heavily into the end-game gear like the Wyrm and Maiming sets. My Mosshorn Scale Mail and other Scale Mails had more defense than the 90 gear in both Physical defense and Mental, that's a little sad. Where it was supposed to make up for it was the stat gains, which were monumental compared to them. But my defense overall still dropped several hundred if I remember correctly once all the gear was on for the main body pieces. I gained more Vitality and other things, but my Defense felt like it was halved, and I for one didn't like that feeling at all. The only class that gets that halve to it's second defense stat, kind of annoying, it does need something to make up for it.
I agree our magical defense needs to be adjusted, What good is physical defense when 99% of the bosses abilities in any dungeon and raid is magic?
something funny about drg and lore, they are killer of dragon.... dragon in the game use often magical attack... why they don't have more mdef then? it's stupid.
my goldsmith has 467 mdef. lol
