3jane that's an old glitch, summon your retainer in another ward ... it's just full, apparently that issue was resolved in 1.17c apparently :s (if i recall correctly)

But there were no other retainers in the ward (Tradescraft) at the time. Will try again. It may just be a horrible lag.

With the release of patch 1.18, the maximum number of retainers allowed to be placed in one market area will be increased. Due to this change, retainers will not be replaced after the version update maintenance is complete. I played for about an hour. Went all over the place. Didn't crash once. Guess I was lucky.

I think it's because there haven't been this many people in game for a long time. The servers forgot how to handle more than 500 people.
