That's kind of the same principle for anything that is large scale. Even if it were PvP, it's the exact same thing. You're killing players/mobs no differently and in large waves. So unless you hate the idea of large scale events, that's how it is.
I honestly don't consider the trash mobs in Dynamis to be "trash", but rather (mini) bosses of their own right. You don't really encounter very many trash mobs in games that can basically wipe a group immediately if precautions aren't taken. Dem SMN, BST pets, and NIN... and to a lesser extent MNK. This is before the level increases and change to how Dynamis is done currently, mind you.
I don't think people had a problem with content in Abyssea, but rather what it ended up doing to the game itself. It completely turned the way you play upside down. It essentially went from large groups to solo/duo/trio parties. Not necessarily a bad thing, IMO, but it did change almost everything about the game.

Don't forget that there were sometimes bosses at the end that you had to stun-lock and zerg to kill.
The final boss of Tam-tara Deepcroft has harder mechanics than Dynamis Lord.
Also, loot that was way worse on RNG than Atma could ever dream to be. I don't even want to imagine what these forums would be like if we had Dynamis rules in this game. *shudders*
