The issue isn't that they are making the game challenging, but how they are making it challenging. In order to break the exclusivity behavior the community has developed, they need to change the focus of the difficulty from the group to the individual. They can still have failure if too many people die, but having it tuned to the way they have it now is shaping the community in a very poor way. Tank and spank is as much a cop out as what they are doing now, it's just another extreme.
