No doubt there is market for that, I'm currently in a market for entertaining time sink. FFXIV is not it.Didn't you say the reason people don't play very often is because of life issues?
Considering FFXI is still online and being updated, I'm pretty sure there's still a market for gamers who want an entertaining timesink. You don't like it? That's fine, I understand that you just want a quick slice of cake, but you shouldn't hate on people who want to make the cake before eating it all. That's so egocentric to think that games should always cater to casual players just because it's part of a larger audience you belong to.
If it's not a game that appeals to your interests, it's not worth playing for you. Saying that people should be ashamed of seaking out long term goals and enjoying the journey has no bearing on logic at all. Just self centered opinion.
Now that that's been said, I'm sure Square will add more solo friendly content down the line, but right now, they're giving the audience and critics what they've been asking for sense day one: more. Content for the core gamer, the kind of gamer that has fun with a challenge and group play. This really shouldn't come as a surprise when only a few months ago people where complaining that the game was way too easy and mindless, expecially for Archers and the Mage classes.
