This is not 2001 where you have at the most 500,000 players playing graphical MMORPGs. The market is larger, there are quite a few more customers in the market searching for something rational and attainable as a form of entertainment in their free time.

Some people work, and then come home and have families to take care of. Some of these people don't dump all the duties on their spouse(see: not a lazy slob). These people, the average human being, would enjoy to have a form of progression that allows them to enjoy some entertainment in shorter sessions. If to play FFXIV I have to form a group to do just about anything(not saying this is how it is yet, as I haven't experienced the new patch enough), that's time out of my short play session and on top of that unfair to those I form a group with when I must inform them of my departure within 30 minutes of beginning.

P.S. EQ was a bad game.
P.P.S. FFXI was a bad game, and you should feel bad for liking it.
    I'm sorry.
I didn't know I had to sacrifice long term goals and challenging gameplay for people who don't even play the game very often. How arrogant and foolish of me to consider a long jouney to a distant reward entertaining. Thank you for making me realize that it's the people who only play the game when they're bored and have a little free time that really matter. I sure was dumb to commit myself to something I enjoyed and you didn't. I'll never make that mistake again.

People "don't play very often" because the game is almost unplayable to most people.

A game that only appeals to a tiny fragment of fanatics will not pull in enough subscriptions to justify ongoing development.

If the developers can't find a way to make this game fun for normal people, it will be pulled offline or allowed to languish with nary an update for years.

Exactly, the game is NOT fun. Logged out yesterday after doing the grand company quests and realizing there still is nothing to strive for and I've had enough till next patch.

    yeah me too.
im still stuck saying the game has potential, but there are still so many things that could be fixed including what was supposedly fixed in this patch.
why mus i press enter after highlighting a mob in order to scroll through my bars? cant i just highlight a mob and start scrolling if im in active/battle mode?....

Yea they really need to get back to the UI brain storming, so many stuff don't make sense still...like the 1 bar skill system.

But then like FF11, learn macro stream lining for now.

I hope they eventually get to UI scaling, since I play at 720p...everything is...huge.

As for progressing...I think it's about right, though XP is steep, but that's what leves and raids are for assuming you can get into PTs.

So Far, fighting an even match aka "same level" feels about right on strength level, and sp level can be better, but with a cap of 50...about right. Fighting just under your level "decent prey" is the solo way and so far works well.

Wish they would fix up the seek system, so people can actually find groups. It's finally for better or worse becoming an issue.

Arcs and mages are whiners when before they could fight stuff 10x over level, and AoE leves in 5 minute mana burns.

The balance isn't restored, but sure as heck better.

Imo they should have not released this patch without atleast a search party system and reworking mob positions to provide decent exp spots.

Didn't you say the reason people don't play very often is because of life issues?

Considering FFXI is still online and being updated, I'm pretty sure there's still a market for gamers who want an entertaining timesink. You don't like it? That's fine, I understand that you just want a quick slice of cake, but you shouldn't hate on people who want to make the cake before eating it all. That's so egocentric to think that games should always cater to casual players just because it's part of a larger audience you belong to.
If it's not a game that appeals to your interests, it's not worth playing for you. Saying that people should be ashamed of seaking out long term goals and enjoying the journey has no bearing on logic at all. Just self centered opinion.

Now that that's been said, I'm sure Square will add more solo friendly content down the line, but right now, they're giving the audience and critics what they've been asking for sense day one: more. Content for the core gamer, the kind of gamer that has fun with a challenge and group play. This really shouldn't come as a surprise when only a few months ago people where complaining that the game was way too easy and mindless, expecially for Archers and the Mage classes.

No doubt there is market for that, I'm currently in a market for entertaining time sink. FFXIV is not it.

To be honest and in my opinon

patch 1.18 provides good update in the game.

for me the game is more responsive in term of technical issues and such.
i love idea about enmity and how a "smart" party play is needed in a party

    in terms of solo play.
i as a former hardcore player in MMORPG but now a forced casual player (due to work and such..)
i can say that solo play has been better. but not still not good enough or what as i have it in my mind, we can say that SE have been trying to balance a mix of solo and party play on both sides. but i think SE you can do better than this.

in terms of mp cost. its a bit surprising as CON/THM are my only class for now. but i think i or we mages can adapt to it.
i haven't tried party play yet and haven't explored most of the changes. but i think its fair to say that SE is making things work around here or doing something about it. But still SE needs to try harder. As time is running out on FFXIV,

To everyone who complains, well i guess we cant please everyone. we are all entitled to our own different opinions.

    in my opinion,
The game still free up to this point. i might as well wait and see what can it offer and if its still worth paying when that day comes.
