We should have a whitelist option for tells

We really should have a whitelist system in addition to the blacklist system. Have it so that it is a checkbox list of things we can choose:

1) Free company
2) Friends List
3) Linkshell members (by linkshell)
4) Custom Whitelist
5) All while in party finder as party leader. (except those on blacklist).

Obviously, also have the option to have this be optional.

I was thinking about this yesterday. I'd like there to be two different tells: The one we have now and a whitelist one. So then I'd just have a separate tab for the whitelist tells. Or just check off the current one. Sweet sweet silence.

I would also like an "All" option for tells for example if you are advertising melding/crafting/whatever and may get random people telling you.
But other than that, yeah this sounds like a really great idea.

Also, for LS checkboxes it should be per LS, there may be some bigger LS's that invite most anyone, which would probably attract gil sellers should this happen (so they could advertise within the LS)

I never understood why we could not receive tells inside instances to begin with. Or view LS members or FC members on at a time. It seems weird to me, since you might want to look into your LS or FC to see if anyone would be willing to join in or whatever.

What is really odd is that there is evidence showing that it is possible to receive tells inside instances.

And the LS and FC thing really makes no sense. It is kind of bothersome, especially when you are in an instance and someone leaves.

A well-implemented whitelist/communication preferences system could drastically reduce RMT spam via /tell, friend request, FC invitation or any other readily abused feature.

For example:

Communication types:

Friend Request
Free Company Invitation
Linkshell Invitation
...

Allow from:

√ Friends
√ Party Members
√ Alliance Members
√ Free Company
√ Linkshell(s)
√ Players in your Duty/Instance
√ Players on your Whitelist
√ /trade partners
x Players in Zone
x Anyone (spammers)
...

The UI itself could be a table:

Friends can: [√]tell [√]invite [√]trade ...

or

Allow /tell from: [√]friends [√]party [√]fc [√]linkshell ... [ ]anyone (spammers)

Not all preferences apply to all communications modes, but you get the idea.

Whitelisting sounds good in theory but in the long run is likely something that would be really destructive to the community.

Reminds me of when SE decided to split the data centers. Some people complained that the community would suffer but most were willing to accept the trade-off for lower pings. So now all the JP that were on Sarga in 1.0 are gone and it really has made it less of a fun environment - at least for me.

At first not many people would whitelist but eventually everyone would and then the ability to connect with others is severely impaired.

If the real issue that people are upset about is spam from gilsellers, I would rather a way be found to more efficiently deal with spam. The OP doesn't really say why they want a whitelist for tells.
