    Now? You could before. One of my favorite strategies was to hang back at the start to try and get one then you hold the activation button to leave it trailing behind you. Impervious to red and blue shells. Though if someone was really good at banking green shells they could still get you from the front or sides.

    In fact if you were really skilled you could swerve in front of people using the blue shell behind you as a melee weapon and knock 'em out. And since it doesn't go away until it hits the person in the lead you could take out more than one person.

    Course the last mariokart I played was on the n64. No idea what more recent titles changed.
