They took the jailing out for now due to the fact that they haven't been able to impliment it properly. This system is what TERA has and i see no reason to have it on ffxiv.
Checks and Balances would need to be put into place in some shape of form.
I would be all for politics in FFXIV except the problem was all ready laid out "Hardcore/Elite/alotoftimeontheirhands" Would benefit greatly. In reality our political system works because its reality, in a virtual world politics are more difficult to simulate correctly due to it being a second life. The people who put the virtual second life in front of reality would just control the majority of any kind of political power.
EDIT: not to mention big LS's tampering with elections and rigging servers.

Well, its just an idea. The developers can work out the details later. There are many different ways of ruling a country, so this just adds another level of interactivity within the virtual world. Even some who consider themselves "casuals" do play a considerable amount of time per week and can still build a pretty good reputation. Like, you can log in the game, have something built with whatever amount of money you earned from taxes, then log off. Maybe make it so only people who are citizens of that country can vote or must have been citizen several number of days or weeks to vote, that would easily make it much more difficult for an entire linkshell to rig elections. By citizen, I mean, you can't be a character created just now and could vote. You can also invest a ton of money by making a ton of characters if you are willing to go that far and rig it that way. That's $3 per character, max 8 per account and $50 per game, so do the math to have 1000 votes on your 1 character singlehandedly.Checks and Balances would need to be put into place in some shape of form.

It is something to do other than fighting or crafting.
You can be like that person in history that we remember today, like the pharaoh who built the pyramids or whatever.
People loved to decorate their moghouse in ffxi with furniture, artwork, silly trinkets. The ability to build things in the city is just like that, except in a much grander scale.

Except everyone who goes to that city has to then deal with another player's shitty design taste instead of having it in a privately instanced abode.
Peach Parfait/Khulan Angura on Gilgamesh
Yes, exactly that is why you vote for the person you like and there are term limits, so you can undo all those things and do your thing when you are president.
tera has this system, lol its called the political system too, it sounds very fun, the idea behind it is cool. being able to deside the fate and taxes of everyone on server or things like that would be great, i would tax everything lmao, then never get a party invite again but it will still be awsome lol.
