Hello all,
tl;dr "Something" is updating my system clock and it's causing 90K disconnects. Help!
The full story:
I'm on a PC running Windows 7 Home Premium Edition (64 bit). I receive the 90K error and get disconnected from the server once or twice a day. After several months of work I have the problem narrowed down, I just can't seem to find a solution.
I tracked the 90K errors over several days and found that they occur at random intervals and at different times of the day. There is no set pattern. My internet connection is still up, it's just the connection to the SE server that gets dropped. I thought it was an ISP / internet connection problem, so I began to connect through a VPN. While this did eliminate lag, I still get the 90K server drops.
I turned to my Windows event log and found that an event called "Kernel-General" was listed there that corresponded to the exact date and time of every 90K disconnect I had. The log details showed that my system clock was being updated by approximately 1 minute 10 seconds. To test this, I logged into the game and then manually updated the system clock. Sure enough it triggered a 90K error.
My next step was to disable Windows time service. I did this by unchecking the "Synchronize with an internet time server" box in the date and time settings, and by entering "w32time /stop" at the command prompt. I verified the service was no longer running in the Task Manager. However, the system time continues to get updated and the 90K error continues to trigger in game.
I then thought there must be a problem with my system clock - specifically the motherboard / bios, even though it's only 2 years old. I left my machine on for 2 days and checked the system time intermittently. The clock ran fine. It wasn't slow or losing time at all, and there were no Kernel-General system time updates listed in the event log. So then I logged into the game and monitored the system clock again. Again, the clock ran fine and was not losing any time. Then out of nowhere the clock update would run and the 90K would trigger.
My last step was to flash my motherboard and reset my bios just to be sure. Still didn't fix the problem.
I'm hoping someone out there can offer some suggestions as to what else would trigger the system clock to be updated, or can at least verify that they too are having this same issue so I know it's not specific to my machine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - I'm at a complete loss!
Thank you!
