It's hard to say from just hearing one side of the story, or not seeing the conversation itself, but sounds like you were just offering polite advice. If so I wouldn't say you were being elitist at all, but just remember some people aren't receptive to critique, so sometimes it's not useful. If someone doesn't respond well to a suggestion I wouldn't bother pushing it since they'll just get upset and it won't have any positive effect. Sometimes people can't take advice / criticism cause they're egotistical, others may just have low self esteem which I can sympathize with more. That said, I hope you won't be put off giving advice to others ^^
