How about a sort of BossRush mode? The random encounters could be bosses from previous dungeons and have different tiers

I liked Battle Arena in FF7 and the various renditions of it in many other RPGs. Would like to see this.

An incredibly hardcore Boss Coliseum would be sick.
Do something different too, like make it 3-man & permit any mixed composition desired.
Have it in a pit where passerbyers can spectate you in real time (the open world, not instanced) from overhead.
Your group can queue for their turn in the arena, server-side only.
iLvl cap it so it's entirely skill-based.
Maybe it automatically gear-swaps you into appropriate gladiatorial garb/weapon.

A battle arena would be very fun to participate in and spectate.

Wasn't that...expected after the chocobo races?
What I want is an FFXIV form of Twister. Here you pair up or larger teams and have to either dodge standing in certain colors or have to stand in certain colors together to score points. Have things on the borders that if you get to and throw "difficulties" at your opponents like in Mario Kart,
Or...a solo form of FFXIV DDR. heh
I LIKE DODGING MECHANICS SO SUE ME :O!
simply spectating would be awesome to give people a chance to see how others are doing and also to kill time while you wait for duty finder or your own party to fill up!

It sound good.
But the arena shouldn't be a boring standard arena. Make it an island. And the enemies the bosses from all dungeons.
This would be the perfect opportunity to bring Skirmish back ^^
