I honestly don't see what was so bad about the stamina bar, it allowed you to control the pace and actions during battle without you just watching and waiting to make a move as your character auto-attacked.
I still say had stamina been given a progressive increase as your rank or physical level went up it would've worked and people would've had less complaints about running out of stamina to fast. Cause I am certain that stamina was the same base no matter what your level or rank was but if they threw in a 100-200 stamina increase every 5 levels then by level 50 you'll be able to attack a lot more times then when you were a lv 1 adventurer and it would've shown the character growing stronger and being able to attack more times before being winded and needing to catch their breath.
That's just me though, I hope they at least keep the stamina concept and all the code for it saved under a folder cause to me it feels like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree, it just needs a little love to get the proper appreciation.

I for one am looking forward to auto-attack but only because it is more familiar due to all my years in FFXI.
I really never saw anything wrong with the stamina bar, it was just... different. It did it's job, showed us all when our next action was coming.
Ah well.. to the future!
